India completed their 3-0 T20 series win over Afghanistan by triumphing in the second Super Over. Rohit Sharma led India with two sixes.
Karim Janat bowled the opening over. Yashasvi Jaiswal struck first by smashing an exquisite square drive into the boundary, followed by an off drive which gave four runs off it. India: 212/4 (Rohit Sharma 118)
Rohit Sharma produced an exceptional, situation-defying century to lead India to 212 for four in their third T20I against Afghanistan at Bengaluru on Wednesday. The skipper hit an astounding 118 from just 69 balls – with 11 fours and eight sixes! Additionally, his fifth-wicket stand with Rinku Singh (190 runs) was India’s highest ever in T20Is and helped the hosts recover strongly after having been reduced to 22 for four.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Nabi added an impressive first wicket partnership of 93 for Afghanistan to keep them competitive, yet were eventually bowled out for 172/9. India played an extraordinary innings that put Afghanistan under serious threat before they even reached half way.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was first to go, falling for a duck against left-arm pacer Zadran. Washington Sundar then caught Nabi leg before for an excellent 57 off 35 balls off spinner Washington Sundar to demonstrate why he has become such an exceptional limited-overs player.
Gulbadin Naib delivered India a crushing blow when he ran out Shubman Gill off a short ball he bowled from Gulbadin Naib to reduce them to 237/6 at tea, and bowled Burger who was caught at slip after top-edging it into the ropes for another wicket.
The second Super Over was an tight affair and came to a close in its fourth ball when Rohit slammed Karim Janat for four and six off Rohit, leaving India needing only 12 runs from three balls over to win it all. The last ball was no-ball and India required just two runs from their remaining three balls if they wanted victory.
Rohit and his side showed great determination in the final over, with Ravindra Jadeja (24 off 15) and Axar Patel (28) both contributing valuable performances – yet this wasn’t enough to give India the victory they were seeking, and were ultimately eliminated from the tournament at semi-final stage. Afghanistan made the final after being propelled forward by Abdul Rahman, who took 2/32. India were led to victory by Arshdeep and Jasprit Bumrah’s three wicket hauls while Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ramandeep each managed one wicket against them – with Sunday set as the date for the Eden Gardens in Kolkata hosting its grand final matchups. India needs one win to clinch the series 3-1 against Sri Lanka and claim bragging rights over them as T20I opponents, having met five times previously in T20Is with Sri Lanka winning four and India taking home one victory each – they’ve never suffered a loss during competition! Both teams will hope to advance into the Emerging Teams Asia Cup final for the first time. Afghanistan: 172/9 (Gulbadin Naib 57)
Afghanistan remain dangerous despite the absence of top striker Rashid Khan, with several experienced players such as Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, and others capable of unsettled any team on any given day. They will hope to continue their strong start in this series against India when they visit Indore on Wednesday.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz instantly signalled his intentions by flicking a delivery from pacer Arshdeep Singh for a four through square leg and then smashing one for six off his fifth ball, setting his team up well to chase down their 182-run target comfortably.
Nabi also scored an excellent quickfire 35-ball 57, with Karim Janat (21 off 10 balls) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (21) also making their presence felt in this crucial innings for the tourists. But Naib made all the difference as his brilliant innings saw six fours and sixes hit to take their total over 171 runs.
Indian batsmen were initially struggling against Afghan bowling’s fast and accurate bowling, but eventually settled down and formed an effective partnership between Rahmanullah and Janat which produced an unbroken 67-run stand in just 30 balls ensuring their team met halfway mark on schedule.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continued their impressive form, striking sixes each during the powerplay to set themselves on track towards scoring 4042 T20I runs between them and will look to build on this as play progresses.
After an indecisive start, Indian batsmen made an impressive comeback and eventually took charge of the innings during its last 30 minutes or so. Scoring at an average rate of over 10 runs per over, they steadily moved towards their target comfortably.
Rohit Sharma started off by pushing at a short ball from Fazalhaq Farooqi for one run before hitting out with an exquisite cover drive that netted four. Yashasvi Jaiswal added two more boundaries using his slog sweep shot – totalling 13 runs off this over.
India win by seven wickets
India was led to an impressive total by Axar Patel, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube who all played key roles. Additionally, bowlers performed exceptionally.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma each hit two sixes during the initial Powerplay over, as Afghanistan struggled to keep up with India’s run rate as wickets fell at regular intervals. Gulbadin Naib was Afghanistan’s highest scorer with 57 off 57 balls, but even his partnership of 56 runs with Mohammad Nabi in just 22 deliveries wasn’t enough to match India.
This T20 game took place at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and marked India’s final T20 fixture before they head off to compete at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 tournament held across West Indies and USA.
India won the toss and elected to bat first. Their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran did not offer much resistance in the early overs, being dismissed for just 84 and 59 runs respectively in just 10 overs.
Indian batsmen quickly responded after the openers had fallen and took an early lead of 47 runs within seven overs. Hardik Pandya recorded four fours and one six to establish an advantage, while Ravindra Jadeja added 37 runs off just 11 deliveries he faced.
Axar Patel and Yashasvi Jaiswal made the most of a good pitch by producing an explosive 68-run stand off just 28 balls, only for Gulbadin Naib to come up with an outstanding catch at long on in the 18th over to remove Patel from play.
Suryakumar Yadav then scored an unbeaten half-century to lead India to a seven-wicket win in the final over, becoming only the second side this year to defeat an underdog side and reach the semifinals of a T20 World Cup tournament. Indian Team will look to maintain their impressive form in their next two matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan. At present they lead their pool with five wins from three matches played so far; tournament will conclude on Sunday March 25.
Each group will qualify one team to advance to the semi-finals, with only the winner of each semi-final moving on to compete in the Super Eight stage and all games to be broadcast live by Star Sports and live updates available via News Nation. India defeated Afghanistan by seven wickets to seal a 3-0 series win and join India and South Africa at the top.
