After suffering two embarrassing defeats – 5-0 away whitewash and 3-0 home drubbings against Zimbabwe and Ireland, respectively – in Twenty20 matches, West Indies is determined to turn things around. Boasting such stars as Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Marlon Samuels as Chris Gayle himself as Chris Gayle himself as players; along with two ICC Champions Trophy wins and four ODI World Cup victories under its belt already, Windies remains one of the strongest sides.
Caribbean cricket was unrivaled during the 80s due to their formidable batting prowess, which helped the Windies return to prominence with an intimidating fast bowling attack led by Frank Worrell and Gary Sobers. This made for thrilling Test matches between these eras!
West Indies cricket fans hope that winning in the T20Is could mark the beginning of an optimistic revival, so all eyes will be on Rovman Powell and Shai Hope as key figures in starting their turnaround journey. Both players were instrumental in the last bilateral series against England, with Powell likely opening and Hope filling in at number seven respectively.
Darren Sammy has announced an unchanged squad for the opening two T20Is against England, with only Alzarri Joseph missing due to his two-match suspension following an altercation with captain Shai Hope during the third ODI. Matthew Forde will take his place.
West Indies team boasts an abundance of powerful batsmen and all-rounders, such as Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Akeal Hosein and Andre Russell providing options in their middle order batting position. Other players such as Johnson Charles, Shamar Joseph and Brandon King should look to make an impressionful contribution as well.
Bowling was given a boost with the inclusion of Trinbago Knight Riders’ Terrance Hinds and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons’ Shamar Springer who earned their inaugural international calls-ups after performing well for their respective sides in this summer’s Caribbean Premier League tournaments.
Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd round off the Windies squad as spinners, while Akila Dananjaya and Gudakesh Motie provide fast bowling depth. Although Kyle Mayers may not be present, Windies fans will welcome back experienced players like Darren Sammy who will look to make an impressionful return performance against India.
England squad for 1st 2 T20Is vs West Indies: Liam Livingstone (C), Jonny Bairstow (WK), Sam Curran (WK), Will Jacks (WK), Jamie Overton (WK), Reece Topley (WK), John Turner (Eng)
The England cricket team represents England at international cricket competition. A full member of the International Cricket Council, this squad holds Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) status. England and Wales Cricket Board, commonly referred to as ECB, currently oversees cricket in England and Wales after previously being under Marylebone Cricket Club control from 1903 until 1996. Under International Cricket Council regulations, players who have previously represented other full members can qualify to represent England if certain nationality requirements are fulfilled. This has allowed Irish internationals Ed Joyce, Boyd Rankin and Eoin Morgan to switch and represent England before Ireland were promoted as full membership; Gavin Hamilton previously played for Scotland.
England experienced an upturn in form during the early 2000s, winning both the 2004 ODI World Cup and a home series win against Pakistan. Unfortunately, however, their fortunes quickly turned against them after suffering an embarrassing Ashes series defeat against Australia; leading to Mickey Moores being fired as head coach and Kevin Pietersen leaving quickly thereafter.
During this period, England reconstructed their batting through the introduction of Alastair Cook and bowlers Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad. Their arrival resulted in improved ODI and T20 performances against New Zealand and Pakistan while Test team performances remained lackluster – particularly offensively.
Anger between Pietersen and management reached its pinnacle during 2013-14 tour to South Africa when tensions flared during the final Test match. A series loss signalled Moores’ departure as head coach as well as Pietersen being suspended permanently from playing cricket for his nation.
Since Graeme Swann and Michael Vaughan’s retirement, England captaincy has been shared by Cook and Joe Root. England have experienced mixed fortunes as a result, notching some significant wins but also suffering some notable defeats, most notably their five-match Ashes whitewash in 2017 and India’s shock four-wicket victory in 2018. Since 2017, India have experienced a successful revival, winning two Test series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan as well as three ODI series against South Africa in 2017. They currently wear blue shirts with navy trousers in all international matches. In International Cricket Council limited-overs tournaments, shirts with “ENGLAND” printed across the front are worn. Since 1993, however, ECB has experimented with different colour combinations for short-sleeve shirts; initially a pale blue version was used until mid-1999 when a brighter shade of blue took its place; currently however the current shirts feature darker blue with navy trim and have also used red versions when used for limited-overs cricket matches.
Match Summary
England secured an important series-clinching victory against West Indies at Kensington Oval on Saturday in the third Twenty20 International. England were set 146 to chase, but managed to recover after losing three wickets during their powerplay to win by five wickets with two balls left – leaving their hosts needing to win their remaining two T20 matches in order to avoid an all-whitewash scenario.
England won the toss and elected to bat, electing to bat first after winning the toss and electing not to field. Their bowlers produced an outstanding performance to limit West Indies to just 147-7 from 20 overs; their batsmen struggled mightily to make any inroads into their target and only Andre Russell’s late surge brought them within striking distance of it.
Jos Buttler returned to England’s attack following a calf injury which sidelined him during their T20 and ODI series against Australia, joining Yorkshire leg-spinner Jafer Chohan who will join Adil Rashid as part of Adil Rashid’s spin flotilla. Hampshire fast bowler John Turner and Warwickshire bat all-rounder Dan Mousley were also included as non-Test squad members.
England’s top order was off to an uncertain start, with Rovman Powell and Shamar Joseph both falling cheaply before Shimron Hetmyer was removed and they recovered their composure with Shimron Hetmyer scoring his three-figure mark off Saqib Mahmood’s final ball in their opening over.
England quickly took advantage of a mix-up between West Indies openers and Jacob Bethell’s fielding skills (he ran out Shai Hope) to establish an early advantage, until Jofra Archer dismissed Nicholas Pooran and caught Hetmyer at deep backward point to leave their opponents struggling for success.
Sam Curran took three wickets within four overs to help England regain control of the match, particularly against Rovman Powell and Hetmyer, before scoring an outstanding 41 from 26 balls he bowled.
Rehan Ahmed produced a magical straight drive that reached the boundary in one ball, sealing England’s two-match series win and raising their highest total ever in this format.
The five Twenty20 Internationals begin November 9 at Kensington Oval in Barbados and three more will follow at St Lucia’s Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium between November 14, 16 and 17. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Vice-Captain Alzarri Joseph lead the Windies into battle against England, having already triumphed against them since 2023 in all four T20I series played against them.
