Afghanistan vs Australia
On Friday in Lahore, Afghanistan will meet world cricket powerhouse Australia for their first meeting since Afghanistan’s memorable Champions Trophy victory over England last July, which left fans on edge of their seats.
Both sides come into this match in decent form – Australia boasting an underperforming pace attack while Afghanistan have plenty of players adept at turning the ball over; opening batsman Ibrahim Zadran should be an especially exciting matchup after scoring an astounding 177-ball Champions Trophy best in their opening innings victory against England last July.
Both teams will go all out for victory in this high-stakes battle for their place in the semi-finals, hoping that winning means making it to final four and top-four finish while losing could send them back into qualifier zone.
Australia are capable of posting an impressive score against Afghanistan, but should remain wary of their team which has shown remarkable improvement since last year and look to put behind them their poor showing against Sri Lanka in this game.
Australia’s opening innings was plagued with difficulties, as they were all out for just 127 in the 20th over. Glenn Maxwell helped keep them competitive early with some quick boundaries before being dismissed by Gulbadin Naib for 59. Marcus Stoinis then got caught at short third man off an angled delivery and caught at short third man to complete their run outs.
Australia was left feeling disappointed with their loss against Afghanistan, though this result was hardly unexpected given the circumstances. Australia has historically boycotted Afghanistan due to changes in women’s treatment there and this loss may only strengthen that resolve.
Afghanistan could lose out if there was another washout tomorrow; they would need England’s help in forcing South Africa’s net run rate lower for qualification into the last four.

The International Cricket Council has sanctioned nations for failing to uphold its regulations, yet Afghanistan remain exempt. Shafiq Stanikzai, Head of Afghanistan Cricket Board stated that such action would simply strengthen Taliban presence and increase their ability to control sports teams in Afghanistan.
Stanikzai believes the International Cricket Council should collaborate with Afghan government to improve the situation; and believes the international community has not done enough to protect women’s rights in Afghanistan. He further stated it was incorrect for Australia and Afghanistan to cancel a series due to political considerations, while noting the International Cricket Council has not responded yet to these comments.
David Richardson of ICC previously condemned Taliban anti-women policies and described its banning of cricket as being unacceptable, though sanctions may be placed upon individuals who violate ICC regulations.
