Afghanistan have found success competing in T20I competitions, yet have struggled in Test matches. ODI Series
Afghanistan won their inaugural ODI series by an overwhelming score of 2-0, marking their debut into international cricket and making history. Their victory was especially meaningful to their people who have endured 42 years of violent insecurity under Taliban rule, which includes restrictions on women and girls rights and restricts freedoms of religion and expression. But cricket provides more than just entertainment – for Afghan people and fans it represents hope, happiness, pride and showing the world they can excel at something so fundamental as playing cricket!
Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 92 runs in the opening One-Day International (ODI). Allah Ghazanfar’s six-wicket haul and Mohammad Nabi’s vital 84 off 79 deliveries was key to Afghanistan’s victory, while Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar’s 66-run partnership provided Bangladesh an early lead, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mahmudullah combined for an unbroken stand of 145 between eight overs at Sharjah before rain stopped play ODI play at Sharjah.
In the third and final ODI of their series against Bangladesh, Bangladesh were determined to avoid defeat and reach the semi-finals. After losing the toss and being sent into bat, they were well placed with eight overs remaining when rain intervened – targeting 244 with Nahid Rana making his debut bowl with an excellent opening spell; unfortunately however, missed opportunities such as dropped catch on Gurbaz led them down an expensive path that ultimately cost them their game.
Afghanistan was victorious against Bangladesh and made history, becoming the first-ever team ever to make it through to a senior World Cup semifinal since 1992. Fans, players and coaching staff all rejoiced as they witnessed this match with pure delight! It will go down in history.
Head-to-Head
Afghanistan defeated Australia by a significant margin in their previous game and now hope to make it two wins in a row against Bangladesh. Bangladesh have not been performing at their best recently and Afghanistan may take advantage of this by taking an early lead and pushing towards semi-final qualification.
Afghanistan won their opening ODI by 92 runs thanks to Allah Ghazanfar’s six-wicket haul and secured yet another Super Eights round win with their dominant performance in match two.
Afghanistan scored an impressive first-innings total of 236/6 with their bat, but later struggled to meet their required target of 283.
Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi were standout performers for the hosts, amassing 104 from just 78 balls between them to help ease pressure during an otherwise trying time. Nahid Rana and Mustafizur Rahman provided valuable support by taking two wickets each.
Bangladesh opened their reply with an aggressive approach and attempted to accelerate quickly, taking three early wickets that gave them hope of winning the match. But spinners ultimately prevailed to limit runs and keep Afghanistan at bay.
Due to rain delays, this match has been postponed nearly an hour and it will be fascinating to witness how the pitch plays during its final stages. So far in this tournament, Saint Vincent weather conditions have produced low-scoring thrillers – maybe another could follow suit here.
Rashid Khan was delighted with the outcome of the game and describes it as a very special day for his team. He remarks on their journey and says they believed in themselves along the way; adding that it’s been very emotional for them as they believed they could achieve victory.
