India-Australia rivalry is one of the most intense and captivating in cricket. From early Test matches to modern T20 battles, these two sides have produced exciting encounters over many years.
Despite some key player departures, the India national cricket team came back strong to win the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series 2-1 against the Australian men’s cricket team, overcoming these obstacles.
1947-48
The 1947-48 cricket season witnessed Australia thwart Indian rivals with ease. Allan Border and Geoff Lawson led an Australian batting attack which proved too powerful for Indian bowling to score large totals against. Australia prevailed by using team effort for victory.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that favoured their batsmen, led by Hemu Adhikari’s half century but it wasn’t enough to prevent an innings defeat by Australia despite Ray Lindwall’s impressive bowling accuracy and penetrative bowling ability.
India’s batting was far from impressive in their opening innings, being dismissed for just 131 runs. Their second innings fared much better, scoring 265 runs to overcome an initial deficit of 265. Their batsmen were led by Sunil Gavaskar who scored an excellent 113 off 269 balls; Mohinder Amarnath contributed his valuable bat with an excellent 57 score as part of India’s tailenders.
Australian team was able to capitalize on its strong start, led by David Boon’s stellar finish. India put up a formidable total of 334 but were powerless against Australian bowlers; final ODI also went in Australia’s favour as they won series 3-0; this victory reflected by comprehensive victories across both matches thanks to strong combinations of batting and bowling performances by Allan Border, David Boon and Craig McDermott as well as disciplined bowling performance by Australia bowlers.
1986-87
India-Australia rivalry is one of the fiercest and passionate in international cricket, having met in 102 Test matches, 143 ODIs and 17 T20Is since 1999. Fans have eagerly anticipated watching these heavyweights battle it out at every opportunity since. Starting on Feb 9 in Nagpur then proceeding onto Delhi and Mumbai for three ODIs after that – Ravichandran Ashwin will lead India while Mitchell Starc may miss due to injury; leg-spinner Todd Murphy could make his debut for Australia – fans cannot wait!
Australians began the season on a low note, losing both Test series and one-day internationals during their English summer tour. Allan Border was an outstanding batsman; however, his team lacked unity and talent.
However, the selectors decided to experiment with two new players in Greg Matthews and Merv Hughes in their first match despite this evidence of poor preparation: both had had successful Shield seasons that earned national selection but it may have been premature for these two to join right away; their lack of experience could have left them exposed as raw and vulnerable.
Still, this match was riveting as Australia made an incredible comeback from a precarious position to reduce England to 96-5 while they chased 273. Botham’s astonishing century changed the course of this great Ashes series; had he not already become an icon, it may have resonated more profoundly.
2003-04
Australia and India’s longstanding rivalry is more than about wins and losses; it embodies pride, passion, and the competitive spirit that defines cricket – an element that was demonstrated during India’s convincing win in the final of 2024 ICC World Cup at Sydney Oval cricket ground.
India?s victory at the World Cup marked both their inaugural victory as well as some measure of vindication for an inconsistent squad that had struggled at times to live up to its status as one of cricket’s premier sides. Furthermore, this match brought home how difficult sport can be? two Indian players missed their own father?s funerals while remaining on tour while another missed his daughter?s birth so as to remain with the squad.
Ricky Ponting?s century in the final of 2003 World Cup was overshadowed by the louder cheers for half-centuries from Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh? but allan Border’s side didn’t suffer such conflicts of interest when defeating Sri Lanka in their semi-final and then going on to sweep Pakistan and Sri Lanka with ease to claim their maiden World Cup title.
But the return game at Ahmedabad?s Narendra Modi Stadium brought more enthusiastic crowds and produced another one-sided result, further underscoring Australia?s superiority over India in quality terms. Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins (all experienced pace attackers who have featured prominently throughout recent Australian cricket history), took wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav amongst other key figures such as Rohit Sharma.
2014-15
India and Australia share one of the most intense and captivating contests in international cricket, dating back four decades and marked by numerous iconic moments as well as some controversial incidents which add a spark to this fierce and entertaining contest. While such incidents are rare now, they still add spice and heat to this fierce and intense rivalry.
Both teams will look to gain momentum ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023 in October, making this ODI series key as they look to fine-tune their playing combinations for limited-overs cricket.
Both teams will strive to improve their batting and bowling while remaining consistent on the field. Both squads boast plenty of talent in this department, such as veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan and all-rounder Virat Kohli; for India this will also include wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan’s return along with fast bowler Ravindra Jadeja’s.
Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet has long been known for producing exciting high-scoring encounters, often decided by a toss. While this will play some part in how the game pans out, both teams possessing potent attacking units should make for an exciting contest!
India’s pace trio of Navdeep Saini, Mukesh Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed will look to add to their expanding Test experience on tour. Saini and Kumar have both been designated as reserves – with Saini likely featuring early in the series while Kumar may play more sparingly at later stages – providing much-needed backup support to fast bowlers lacking depth at present.
2018-19
As India and Australia prepare to meet for the first time this year, both sides have much riding on this series. India hopes that victory would cement their top position in ICC Test rankings while Australia would view victory as crucial towards qualifying for World Cup final.
India will begin their series against South Africa from February 9-13th in Nagpur with four Test matches and three ODIs. Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shreyas Iyer as well as Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul return along with Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav Ishan Kishan Mohammad Shami Mohd Siraj who provide bowling depth respectively have all been included.
Australia haven’t defeated India in two Test series and will look to change that record this summer. Additionally, they hope to avenge their shocking Champions Trophy final loss against Pakistan at Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium earlier this summer.
Australia and India have split 151 One Day Internationals evenly with India winning 57 of them and Australia taking 84 victories; however, Australia have an edge in Twenty20Is against India with their 12-8 record against them.
The series promises to be an intense contest with tension high for both teams involved. The rivalry between these countries dates back to over 75 years, making any match between them hotly-contested contest. At one time there was great controversy associated with these clashes; but recently players and fans are coming together more peacefully in enjoying these arch-rivalries’ rivalries.
