Chennai Super Kings will host Sunrisers Hyderabad at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday for their second IPL clash of 2018. CSK are joint winners with five titles across ten finals; currently led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and coached by Stephen Fleming.
CSK holds an impressive four-win advantage at Chepauk. However, SRH will look to rebound after their defeat to LSG in Game 1. The Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad standings will play a crucial role in determining the momentum for both teams this season.
1. Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings (commonly referred to as CSK) are an Indian Premier League franchise based out of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India owned by India Cements Ltd and established as one of eight franchises when IPL began in 2008. Since their formation they have won five titles and reached 12 playoffs tournaments since inception under former captain MS Dhoni while their roster features both veteran international players as well as young Indian talent.
CSK are well-renowned for their impressive record in the IPL, known for their winning formula and unbeaten league stage record. This season has seen them claim six of seven home matches and remain undefeated during league stage play despite an uncertain start. Dhoni has proven vital to their team success while their bowlers excelled on Chepauk pitches that favour spin.
CSK moved to the top of the points table following their commanding 63-run win against Gujarat Titans (GT) at MA Chidambaram Stadium with an impressive Net Run Rate, overtaking GT by two points despite their loss and remain within striking distance of qualifying for playoffs.
CSK has outshone SRH in the IPL, winning 14 out of 20 matches between them in competition. Both teams met twice in finals; both times CSK came second to SRH on both occasions; CSK went on to win more titles (10) while coming second each time; plus these teams have met several times other competitions such as World Cup and Champions Trophy tournaments! Check below for their respective records against one another.
2. Sunrisers Hyderabad
SunRisers Hyderabad first came into IPL competition in 2013, filling the void left by Deccan Chargers who had to cease due to financial issues. From their first season onward, SRH made the playoffs each season under David Warner and eventually reached their first and only title win against Royal Challengers Bangalore by defeating them in an exciting final. Their success is credited heavily to Warner’s bat-wielding ability and an attack led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mustafizur Rahman who led an attack led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mustafizur Rahman who led their bowling attack alongside David Warner’s bat.
In 2015, SRH finished sixth in the league table but made the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Rajasthan Royals. Even without Warner in their ranks, Kane Williamson still performed admirably as captain while their fast bowlers including Rashid Khan and Amit Mishra performed strongly at home.
SRH had their most difficult IPL campaign yet in 2019, winning just six and losing nine league matches overall. Still, thanks to their superior net run rate they reached the playoffs and reached Delhi Capitals’ second qualifier round where they fell. Warner returned as captain and performance from players such as Jason Holder, Sandeep Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha and T Natarajan helped overcome an uneven start with six losses from nine matches played so far.
After their match against Gujarat Titans was washed out on Sunday, scoring one point for each side, Sunrisers Hyderabad have taken over third place in the IPL standings – moving past Chennai Super Kings into third. Now on 15 points (two less than CSK and Mumbai Indians), SRH hope to hold onto their position by beating Mumbai Indians who fell from seventh to seventh with their loss against GT.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders advanced to second place by defeating Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens on Friday, although they still trail table-topper Rajasthan Royals by two points. Furthermore, with this win KKR became one of two teams who have managed to win all home matches so far in 2019.
KKR were hoping to improve upon their sixth-place finish from last season and purchased several players at auction in an effort to do just that. Gautam Gambhir retained as captain, leading his side back into the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Sunil Narine and Robin Uthappa led them through league stages while Varun Chakravarthy once more found his form.
Unfortunately, they were unable to build on this momentum in the playoffs and were defeated by Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator round. With strong performances during their India leg of competition this year, they will hope to rectify past errors and finish in the top two for 2019.
KKR have only managed five wins out of 21 matches this season, yet have seen their chances improve with the addition of quality overseas players like Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. Their recent victory against Delhi should give them confidence ahead of their match with Sunrisers Hyderabad; these teams have faced each other 20 times before with Chennai owning an impressive 14-6 head-to-head record; on April 28, MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk will host this battle royale; it promises to draw huge crowds and could well determine who advances to final.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are an Indian Premier League cricket team representing Bangalore in Karnataka. Established by United Spirits in 2008 and taking their name from their Royal Challenge liquor line, their home games take place at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
RCB have made three IPL final appearances but have never managed to claim victory in any tournament final appearance, finishing as runners-up against Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.
Under Virat Kohli’s tutelage, the defending champions have looked dangerous this season. After an inauspicious start, Bangalore-based side have won six out of their last eight matches and appear poised for another run at glory.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have shown themselves to be formidable opponents, winning three out of the last four matches to boost their chances of finishing second in the table. Over five previous meetings between these sides, CSK have come out on top in 14 cases while only winning once themselves.
CSK have an unparalleled record when it comes to head-to-head matches against Hyderabad-based franchise RCB at Chepauk Stadium, winning all four previous meetings there with ease, including an emphatic seven wicket victory last season against an undermanned RCB side.
CSK are hoping to rebound from their defeat against Delhi Capitals and return to “normal service” under Faf du Plessis’ leadership, but Sunrisers will prove formidable opposition; both teams must bring their A-game if they hope to lift the Indian Premier League trophy for a third time.
5. Kings XI Punjab
KXIP started their season off strongly by winning their opening games but then went on to lose five out of six matches thereafter. They managed one Super Over match against Kolkata Knight Riders that proved pivotal as Harshal Patel delivered some brilliant bowling for KXIP to win that match, which later allowed them to gain two more victories against Delhi and Mumbai before succumbing to Chennai Super Kings to end sixth on the table.
Punjab endured an uneventful campaign last year as they failed to capitalise on their powerful batsmen, particularly captain Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul, scoring big but ultimately failing to advance them into the playoffs. Even so, Punjab have twice made it this far in their ten year history but are yet to claim victory on the trophy front.
CSK will look to put up a fight when they face off against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk on Sunday. These teams have met 20 times already in IPL play; CSK have held off against their rivals 14 times while only 6 victories were claimed by SRH.
Both teams have played 12 matches this season, and SRH currently leads CSK head-to-head records with 10 victories, while CSK have amassed 14 victories. When these two sides meet again at MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 28, it could have significant ramifications on their race for one of four spots and both will look to avenge any defeats from previous rounds as they vie to enter finals as strong contenders – an event known as South Indian Derby which always draws huge anticipation and fanfavouritise!
