Delhi Capitals defeated Gujarat Titans by four runs in an action-packed high-scoring thriller, moving them up three places on the table and giving their campaign an important boost.
Mukesh Kumar to Rashid Khan: SIX; Mukesh delivers an audacious yorker length delivery which turns more than anticipated and over the leaping Stubbs at long-on for maximum points. For a detailed breakdown of this match, you can check the Gujarat Titans vs Delhi Capitals match scorecard.
Shai Hope and Prithvi Shaw
Prithvi Shaw is an audacious batsman who has the potential to explode onto the international cricket stage, which led Delhi Capitals to retain him prior to IPL auctions. However, his performances have fallen below expectation thus far.
Shaw was dropped mid-season last season and has not managed to make an impression in this campaign either. Not because he has not tried, but rather that the team has not given him enough opportunities. It is difficult to comprehend his performance given he is one of the finest batsmen domestic cricket has to offer.
Unfortunately, he has yet to score even one fifty this season and appears incapable of coming close. It must be extremely disconcerting for this youngster as they were expected to be one of the key contributors for their franchise in this campaign.
But there’s no cause for pessimism; things can still improve dramatically if he trusts in himself and puts in hard work at his game. Once that is accomplished, there should be no reason why he cannot perform at his previous levels once more.
Indian opener Virat Kohli hasn’t looked himself this season and was particularly poor against KKR at Eden Gardens. His footwork and timing had been off, forcing him back on course with his natural game. To bring out his best results he must focus on simplifying his batting process in order to be at his best.
Pant won the toss and decided to bowl first, taking two wickets each from Khaleel Ahmed and Axar Patel during a Powerplay that left GT on 30 for 4. Sai Sudharshan played an attacking innings before being caught behind off a slower delivery from Rasikh Salam; Shubman Gill was run-out thanks to Pant’s brilliant fielding in running from short midwicket and underarming it towards his right.
Abishek Porel and Ricky Bhui
Abishek Porel and Ricky Bhui put Delhi Capitals in an excellent position against Gujarat Titans on day three of their Duleep Trophy 2024 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Both batsmen have been playing exceptionally for DC this season; this performance marks another success story for them both.
Porel has been on an outstanding run this season and continues to press his case for an India call-up. In three games in the competition he has made an impressionful performance against Rajasthan Royals; captain Pravin Amre commended his effort, noting that Abishek “has an aggressive mindset when the ball comes within range, taking bold shots if available. He doesn’t play safe and is consistently performing”.
Abishek was recruited as Rishabh Pant’s replacement due to injury and has seized every opportunity that has come his way, scoring two impressive fiftys against RR in consecutive innings and playing as part of an effective middle order, even while batting at number seven in game two.
He was recognized for his hard work by being selected to the 2024 World Cup squad – his inaugural inclusion into this roster and will look to build upon previous success at this tournament.
Team management should be pleased with how their youngsters are progressing; players such as Prithvi Shaw, Abishek Porel and Shai Hope are showing great promise for the future. Likewise, Axar Patel and Khaleel Ahmed may provide vital assistance at such an important point in the season.
Gujarat Titans have struggled against Delhi Capitals recently and this match will provide an intriguing opportunity to see how both teams perform against one another. If successful, one side could move into sixth spot while if unsuccessful they may fall back down into seventh spot – that makes this match all the more intriguing!
Khaleel Ahmed and Axar Patel
Khaleel Ahmed has been one of Delhi Capitals’ stand-out bowlers this season and his impressive display earned him selection for India’s T20 World Cup squad. Khaleel shone brightly during last year’s competition and will hope to add to his haul at this year’s competition. When speaking on DC Podcast’s discussion of Khaleel joining India’s squad he expressed his pleasure at making it and expressed hope he can maintain his impressive form throughout this tournament.
After losing three wickets during the Powerplay, Khaleel returned with a maiden over to keep Titans at bay before picking up his first wicket of the match thanks to a fine catch by Rishabh Pant at short midwicket – Sai Sudharsan for 12. Ishant Sharma then continued their winning run by stumping out David Miller with ease for just 1.
Axar Patel was equally impressive on the field with two impressive catches to his name and no sign of being affected by rustiness in his batsmanship. One such catch came off Sandeep Warrier in the 17th over, saving himself and maintaining an unlikely total of 224-4 for that game.
Khaleel and Axar were well backed up by Ajay Gupta’s quick innings – including hitting two sixes and fours in just 19 overs before being dismissed by Sandeep Warrier – as their lower order struggled to keep up with run rate demands; Khaleel and Axar managed to form an important 113-run partnership during that period.
Rishabh Pant’s off-field antics have quickly become legendary following his playfully tossing Khaleel into a pool during a team get-together earlier this week. A video showing Khaleel’s reaction went viral and displayed their close bond off the field; since then it has received over one million views and remains one of the most-viewed posts on social media. Pant is well known for his playful side; often cracking jokes with teammates while regularly poking fun at opponents with quick reactions in match play!
Abhinav Manohar and Azmatullah Omarzai
Mukesh Kumar continued his impressive bowling performance by taking two more wickets in one over, leaving Gujarat Titans on 89/6 after 17 overs and dismantled completely. Both Abhinav Manohar and Azmatullah Omarzai struggled with the bat, with only Abhinav managing to score runs – no other batsmen were able to reach double figures and the team were bowled out for such an insufficient total at home.
Delhi Capitals will aim to regain their winning ways following their defeat to Gujarat Titans, playing an equally strong side that defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad last time out. Hardik Pandya will be available for selection for this game; however he won’t feature as part of their starting eleven.
This will be their third encounter this IPL, with both teams having taken two wins apiece in previous encounters at home ground (Narendra Modi Stadium in Delhi winning by 62 runs in their debut meeting).
Shubman Gill opened up the first powerplay over with an impressive six off Mohit Sharma’s fifth delivery. Unfortunately, however, he attempted a second six but missed cleanly.
Shai Hope then plays a square cut towards deep midwicket for a single off the third delivery from Sandeep Warrier’s over – only 7 runs were given away during that over.
Warrier returned for the final over, restricting Delhi to just a single run off each of his first two balls and only giving away two more runs as batters attempted to speed up.
The Gujarat Titans captain offers reflection on his team’s performance at home stadium, noting how difficult it was for players to cope with dew factor conditions. He credits Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore with helping keep competitive even under these difficult conditions, while acknowledging how home crowds provide extra encouragement and an extra boost for efforts of players on the field.
