Brief Scorecard
Gujarat Titans defeated Mumbai Indians after an exciting match that was tightly-contested and back and forth, eventually emerging victorious and earning themselves an emotional win. Shubman Gill will no doubt take great satisfaction from getting off to a winning start as captain; Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan, Spencer Johnson and Mohit Sharma all played their parts; Rohit and Brevis seemed poised for victory early but Sai Kishore’s wicket turned the tide and allowed GT to take control for the remaining 6 overs.
Mumbai Indians remain undefeated against Gujarat Titans despite their defeat, and hope to replicate that success against Punjab Royals in their next match. Sai Kishore, Mohit Sharma, Spencer Johnson’s impressive bowling performance as well as Hardik Pandya’s bat performance will hopefully improve upon what has been an underwhelming showing so far in this tournament.
Shubman Gill of Gujarat Titans offers his evaluation and commends the efforts of their bowlers in such trying conditions. While dew factor was a challenge for their team, thanks to Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma’s performances, their home crowd have also played an instrumental role in their team’s success during 2024 and this will serve as motivation to replicate these performances for future matches.
Gujarat Titans 168/7
Rohit Sharma made an effective decision after winning the toss and opting to field first, as the Gujarat Titans struggled to adjust on a slow surface.
Jasprit Bumrah shone with the ball as he bowled three overs for just seven runs – well supported by spinners Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan who shared four wickets between them – debutant Gerald Coetzee and Piyush Chawla also made significant contributions with bat and ball.
MI’s batting found it difficult to start moving, with openers quickly succumbing and Shubman Gill holding his nerve throughout a tense chase. They reached 107-2 after 12 overs with conditions favouring them but Sai Kishore trapping Rohit Sharma leg before and Mohit Sharma sending back Dewald Brevis sent them spiralling downhill quickly.
Rahul Tewatia took control of the chase soon thereafter, racing to fifty in only 31 deliveries while hitting multiple boundaries during his innings. Soon afterwards he was joined in the run chase by debutant Piyush Chawla who kept their respective scores ticking along at an impressive pace.
Umesh Yadav sends in a short ball and Tewatia pulls it straight into Spencer Johnson at long-on for 11. Immediately afterwards, Umesh goes full outside off and Tewatia hits it over extra cover fence for six!

Support was provided by other batsmen who got starts but eventually fell prey to some remarkable bowling from Arjun Tendulkar and Dewald Brevis.

After that, the game remained tied until Kieron Pollard played an outstanding knock to rejuvenate Mumbai’s innings and Tilak Varma also provided invaluable assistance – the two of them put on 75 runs between them over the final five overs.
Ishan Kishan was bowled for 45 by Alzari Joseph for being outpaced by a slower delivery and was caught by Rashid Khan at short midwicket for 45 – missing out on scoring an important century and giving Rashid Khan another wicketful catch at short midwicket to deny Ishan Kishan his dream hundred score.

Gerald Coetzee bowls a full length delivery outside off and David Miller attempts a big hit early, only for it to miss entirely and travel past short third fielder for a boundary.
Chance! But that would have been their last opportunity. MI batsmen attempted to break free, but Sai Kishore and Mohit Sharma quickly responded, taking action to move the ball for single and have any reviews denied.
MI need 19 from their final over, with Chawla on strike and looking to pull from a short ball but instead getting hit in the top edge by Sai Kishore at fine leg. A quick single followed, ending their match.
