India: Virat Kohli (C), Shikhar Dhawan
Even after their recent batting collapse, India remain favourites to win their three-match ODI series against Bangladesh at home. Rohit Sharma will look to cement Shikhar Dhawan and K L Rahul’s positions as opening pair before also showing more intent with this format of the game.
India recently defeated Bangladesh by an unprecedented margin in an ODI matchup at Dhaka on November 7 – their largest win ever over Bangladesh since this format began.
Since MS Dhoni stepped aside as India captain for red-ball cricket, Kohli has led India to victory in every major ICC tournament including Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh have enjoyed impressive ODI form this season and will look to maintain their dominance against them. There have been some changes made to their squad due to Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das’ injuries; both players should miss out. Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury will take over for them, joining an already formidable Bangladesh ODI squad which also includes Mominul Haque (captain), Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Afif Hossain Yasir Shah Mustafizur Rahman Mahmudullah. Shubman Gill will replace Mohammad Saifuddin as fielding coach; it will mark his first ODI appearance since December 2014! The series kicks off Sunday at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens; India have won each of the previous six contests between them and are hoping to extend that streak with yet another win on Sunday.
Bangladesh: Mominul Haque (C), Shakib Al Hasan
Bangladesh only began playing Test cricket 10 years ago but have already established themselves as one of the most consistent sides in world cricket. They won the inaugural ICC Knockout Trophy (later known as Champions Trophy) in 2022 and have made numerous outstanding performances at international level.
In 2009, they participated in two Test matches against the West Indies and won both to register their inaugural away test series victory. Later in 2011, they secured their inaugural home test series victory.
Bangladesh have made remarkable advances since then, particularly in T20 Internationals (T20Is). Furthermore, they have set a model of grassroots cricket with their age-group and youth teams performing admirably at competitive cricket tournaments – culminating with Bangladesh Under-19 team’s win of the ICC Under-19 World Cup trophy in South Africa earlier in 2020.
Mominul Haque, Bangladesh’s current national captain and an outstanding fielder. He led his side to victory at the ICC Champion Trophy 2022 as captain, becoming an influential part of their side and making them stronger overall.
Shakib Al Hasan has made himself into an icon for Bangladesh cricket. An allrounder in both tests and T20Is, he has won an array of accolades including being awarded Player of the Series awards on multiple occasions – something no other player can claim!
Shakib Al Hasan is one of the driving forces behind Bangladesh’s success in both one-day internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 internationals (T20Is). With an outstanding strike rate and record as an outstanding run-scorer, along with being an outstanding wicket-taker. Shakib’s absence will be felt greatly by his teammates but selector Hannan Sarkar remains confident he will soon return.
Bangladesh: Mushfiqur Rahman
Bangladesh is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), holding both Test and one-day international status. Bangladesh first made their official debut at England’s 1979 ICC Trophy tournament where they recorded two victories and two losses to finish sixth overall.
However, it wasn’t until 2004 that Afghanistan finally managed to win their inaugural Test match against Zimbabwe thanks to Habibul Bashar’s hat-trick and Khaled Masood’s century. They competed in the 2005 ICC World Cup but were knocked out at group stage despite beating South Africa.
Bangladesh have since shown tremendous strides forward, particularly in shorter forms of the game such as One Day Internationals (ODI). They reached the quarter-finals at 2015 ODI World Cup and also took home first prize at 2016 Asia Cup.
Bangladesh boasts a large youth population and sports are widely popular across its urban centers. While football used to reign supreme as the dominant form of entertainment, cricket is slowly making inroads into this sector of society.
Bangladesh have an excellent record in one-day internationals against their immediate neighbours and are considered difficult to beat at home, yet struggle against more established opponents like India and Pakistan when playing away from home.
Bangladesh have experienced limited success in Test matches so far, losing 10 of 11 so far. Their second Test against Sri Lanka at Colombo saw Sri Lanka win by an innings and 196 runs, prompting coach Chandika Hathurusingha to criticise her batsmen as needing to learn how to apply themselves and “bat in sessions”. They also struggled in a 2001 series against New Zealand where both matches saw them being dismissed for only 92 runs each time!
India: Rishabh Pant (WK), Shubman Gill
Rishabh Pant is one of the world’s most prolific wicketkeeper-batsmen. Since joining Delhi Capitals’ Indian Premier League side and quickly making an impression with his fast batting, quick scoring ability, and aggressive style he quickly become one of their fan favorites with fast scores and dynamic cricket play. On top of being an exceptional batsman he also proves himself an adept wicketkeeper with great understanding for this aspect of cricket. At only 22 years old Rishabh is already making waves within cricket – becoming a fan favorite thanks to his explosive bat and powerful bowling style he brings into every matchup!
Rishabh Singh returned from injury and scored an outstanding century against Bangladesh at Chennai. The youngster proved he could take on subcontinent conditions and can hit the ball over any boundary with ease; hoping to replicate such performance against Bangla Tigers.
Shubman Gill is another exciting young talent in India’s squad. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been impressive with Kings XI Punjab of Indian Premier League and will likely open the batting alongside KL Rahul when playing Test matches. Additionally, Gill’s good fielding skills should play a significant role in any series that ensues.
Both players will look to continue their impressive form in the forthcoming Test series against Bangladesh, especially with respect to the Bangla Tigers as they have an exceptional team in them that makes for compelling viewing – their match-ups always draw massive crowds!
Bangladesh are led by Najmul Hossain Shanto and boast an experienced squad, as well as promising youngsters such as Litton Das, Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah who should all play key roles. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan will help to improve their spin attack which has been one of the main weaknesses in their game thus far.
