Teams have begun gathering at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium for national anthems before play begins. India will start off proceedings with Arshdeep Singh taking the new ball.
WICKET! Mohammed Siraj struck for India with his bowling. Aiming a short ball at George Dockrell’s stumps, Mohammed delivered one short delivery which hit its target and mistimed. Jasprit Bumrah settled under it to take an easy catch.
Paul Stirling
Irish batsmen are struggling to defend their wickets as Indian bowlers take more and more scalps from them, seemingly heading Ireland down a slippery slope that could eventually see all their wickets go bye bye.
Paul Stirling played an instrumental role in Ireland’s revival against Pakistan, scoring an aggressive century that combined control and raw aggression.
He is an experienced limited overs cricket player, having represented Ireland across all formats and excelled in T20 Super League and Abu Dhabi T20 Cup competition. However, today he was undone by India’s bowlers as his attempt at an expansive drive off Arshdeep Singh resulted in him failing to connect properly and walking back to the pavilion without making contact. This setback for Ireland proved especially costly given they had already struggled to keep wickets intact.
Andrew Balbirnie
India’s pacers are keeping up the pressure on Ireland with regular chances to take wickets and its batters are finding it difficult to score runs as they play cautiously.
Balbirnie is an integral member of Ireland’s team and will aim to assist their foundation by playing in their inaugural Test match against Pakistan in May 2018; being dismissed for 2 on his debut.
He will look to carry on his fine form with the bat, having scored several fifty-plus scores for Ireland. Harry Tector, Gareth Delany and Curtis Campher will provide solid support, while Mark Adair and Lorcan Tucker provide invaluable bowling assistance.
Lorcan Tucker
Tucker led Ireland in their opening match against India with two sixes and four boundaries at an economy rate of 4.56 as they reached 108/2 after 10.2 overs. Unfortunately, however, he would also become the final man out when caught at deep point by Ravi Bishnoi off Harshal Patel for 2 runs off Harshal.
Irish innings faltered after their initial powerplay, as India took control through Yasir Mohammad and Vatsal Vaghela taking three wickets off four balls by Yasir Mohammad and Vatsal Vaghela claiming three wickets with just four deliveries from Yasir Mohammad and Vatsal Vaghela taking three wickets with just four deliveries from both players in four balls from Yasir Mohammad bowler Rahul Tector who bowled Shane Getkate for five before bowled by leg-spinner Shane Getkate was dismissed by an off-spinner who gained some movement on the pitch and India quickly closed on victory before Rishabh Pant has taken his seat on his home side as captain batting line-up for victory as India closes in on victory as hosts prepare victory and India are in sight of victory.
Harry Tector
Tector is Ireland’s youngest team member and boasts a formidable sports resume in multiple disciplines – playing hurling, Gaelic football and top-flight rugby as a teenager before turning his attention towards cricket as an adult.
Tector made his mark as an exceptional left-handed batsman when he captained Ireland’s Under-19 World Cup team at 2018. Since then he has made waves on the T20 franchise circuit playing for both Munster Reds and Northern Knights.
He earned his spot in the national team after impressing in training games and in a practice match against England Lions side led by Paul Stirling. He will bat at number four, having proved his mettle on T20 franchise circuit and taking control of matches when required – something he will look to continue against India.
Curtis Campher
India won the toss and bowled in overcast conditions to dominate Ireland with pacers from India delivering. Arshdeep Singh set the pace, removing both Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie with one over. Mohammed Sirajj and Jasprit Bumrah provided ample support.
Curtis Campher is an exciting all-rounder with great promise in the game. After leaving South Africa to play for Ireland, he quickly adjusted to his new surroundings like a fish would to fresh water.
He has shown his ability in all formats for Ireland, proving that he can perform across formats. Additionally, he can become an important asset to their side with Lorcan Tucker, Josh Little and George Dockrell all capable of making their mark and inspiring young Irish cricketers to develop further.
George Dockrell
George Dockrell is a slow left-arm orthodox spin bowler currently playing for Leinster Lightning in domestic cricket, while also being part of Ireland’s senior national team and making his World Cup debut during 2015.
India’s bowlers have been formidable, taking wickets at will with ease and exerting pressure on Irish batters without relenting or offering them any hope of recovery. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah in particular have done outstandingly well and given no chance for Irish batters to mount any comeback attempts.
WICKET! Siraj bowls a short ball to Dockrell who attempts to pull it over leg side but mistimes his shot and instead sends it towards midwicket where Jasprit Bumrah took an easy catch – Ireland were reduced to six for two wickets as their innings collapsed quickly – their batting line-up has disintegrated as Jasprit Bumrah took an easy catch at midwicket – an embarrassing display for the reigning champions – they now face an uphill struggle to qualify for Super 8.
Gareth Delany
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will lead India’s squad in their opening T20 World Cup 2024 match against Ireland at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav will not make an appearance, with Rohit opting for Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel instead as utility bowlers.
Hardik picks off Adair as he goes for an irresponsible cut, offering Shivam Dube an easy catch at sweeper cover and creating an instantaneous shockwave in their Irish innings! They now stand at 81-9.
Mark Adair
Mark Adair is a versatile seam bowling all-rounder who has represented Ireland at both age group and first-class levels, including first class cricket for Warwickshire. Bowling both ways and being a powerful batsman down the order, Mark made his international debut for Ireland in 2023 and quickly established himself with T20I cricket, picking up key wickets such as Virat Kohli on tour of USA where Ben White caught it behind for one. A central cog in Irish set-up and one with great promise ahead, Adair has many more years ahead ahead.
Joshua Little
Joshua Little is an Irish cricketer and plays for Ireland national team as a left-arm fast bowler who can also bat. He made his international debut during a 2022 T20 World Cup match against Sri Lanka and also competes in various T20 franchise leagues such as Gujarat Titans.
He is an exciting prospect who could go on to be an important figure for Ireland in the coming years. He has proven himself an effective bowler who is both economical and hard hitting with bat and ball. Selected for Ireland’s tour of Bangladesh as part of their Tri-Nation Series tournament; also made his ODI debut against England this year – this talented youngster should continue his rise over time.
Ben White
White, a tall legspinner who bowls quickly and flat, made his T20I debut during Ireland’s 2021 home summer and has since been selected for their World Cup squad. He provides good support to their faster bowlers while adding variety to their attack.
India’s pace attack proved too much for Ireland despite skipper Rohit Sharma’s freak upper arm injury to claim an eight-wicket victory during their T20 World Cup opener at Nassau County Stadium, New York. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj didn’t even need to bring their A game on an unconventional drop-in track with variable bounce and extra seam movement.
Rishabh Pant strikes it hard through the gap to deep extra cover region for four. An incredible shot from Ireland’s wicket-keeper batsman. Now they lead by 96-4.
