Sri Lanka’s historic day must be recognized, from both bowlers and batters alike. Both bowlers were remarkable while batsmen also deserve plenty of praise for putting up fighting scores throughout.
Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka early on to Mohammed Siraj, but Avishka Fernando and Kamindu Mendis put up an effective partnership that saw Sri Lanka secure an unassailable lead in the India national cricket team vs Sri Lanka national cricket team match scorecard.
India vs Sri Lanka
India and Sri Lanka will compete against each other in two tournaments – three Twenty20 International (T20Is) and five One Day Internationals (ODIs). Suryakumar Yadav will lead India during T20Is while Rohit Sharma will captain for ODIs; Shubman Gill will serve as vice-captain during T20 series while Ravindra Jadeja will sit out of those matches.
The series will take place across three cities – Guwahati, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram – beginning January 10 with the inaugural One-Day International and concluding January 15. Collectively between them both teams has played 162 ODI matches with India leading with 93-2 wins.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Though they lost both set batters during the Powerplay, Avishka Fernando and Kamindu Mendis assisted Sri Lanka to compile a strong total of 274/7. India’s bowlers responded well; Jasprit Bumrah’s precise lines and variations caused trouble for Sri Lankan batsmen while Axar Patel, Riyan Parag and Mohammed Siraj secured wickets at key moments in play.
Sri Lanka’s batting performance won hearts of fans and made history, thanks to Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis’ resilient performances with bat and ball; Wanindu Hasaranga made an important contribution, contributing both runs and wickets to Sri Lanka.
At the conclusion, both teams battled hard for victory. India lost an appeal against Shivam Dube in the final over, but Jeffrey Vandersay managed to hang onto his catch and give Sri Lanka their historic win against India for a bilateral series since 1997 – long and loud celebrations ensued for Sri Lanka and their fans, leaving plenty of memorable moments from an entertaining contest that left plenty of unforgettable moments behind for both teams to cherish. India will look to bounce back with another strong performance in Colombo on Wednesday in what should be an equally competitive encounter!
Preparations
India and Sri Lanka will vie to win a three-match T20I series before Rohit Sharma retires from T20Is. Hardik Pandya will lead in Rohit’s absence alongside Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, with Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi Kuldeep Yadav Mohammed Siraj Washington Sundar Axar Patel all providing crucial bowling assistance to Pandya in this department.
The Sri Lanka national cricket team is a professional cricket team representing Sri Lanka internationally in international cricket competition. Distinguished for its strong batting and bowling lineups, players such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Angelo Mathews have set numerous records during their time on this team as well as winning several tournaments as world champions.
Sri Lanka scored 248 for seven wickets in their one-day international match, led by Avishka Fernando’s superb 96 and Kusal Mendis’s solid 59 runs. On his debut Riyan Parag took three wickets off India batting squad but they could not match Sri Lanka’s run rate and were bowled out within 26.1 overs for just 138 runs scored.
Sri Lanka displayed superb batting skills throughout their innings. After taking an initial lead of 229 runs in their first innings, they proceeded to reach their target with nearly three and a half hours still remaining and seven overs left over for their opponents. Thilan Samaraweera made history for Sri Lanka by smashing two fours and two sixes off his 102 ball innings!
Sri Lanka’s win in the third ODI was an essential one as they prepare for the 2023 World Cup. Although they stand a good chance of qualifying, without Lasith Malinga and Rangana Herath as experienced players it will be tougher than expected to qualify. Furthermore, Sri Lanka needs an efficient top-order which consistently scores runs; unfortunately they lack that at present; it will be interesting to see how well they do in 2023 tournament; should they get consistent top-order batting they will become even more dangerous opponents.
Bowling
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, only for them to lose both opening pairs within the Powerplay. Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis managed to keep things together until spinners Axar Patel and Akila Dananjaya took multiple wickets each.
After several overs with only two runs edging across, visitors to India were finding it hard to breach India’s bowling. Washington Sundar came to India’s rescue in their opening Super Over, claiming two wickets and giving India control once again.
Pant made a successful run at Mendis with an accurate delivery that hit him straight down the ground and produced an edge for Pant at short fine leg, before breaking up Samarawickrama’s middle stump with another short ball to put himself into an excellent position.
Kuldeep Yadav then claimed his second wicket of the match when Mendis attempted to slog sweep him and was caught at deep midwicket by Axar Patel for 27 runs. Mendis sought review but it was unsuccessful and is out.
Khaleel Ahmed then entered the fray, giving up only two runs during his over as Sri Lanka struggled to make any headway in their innings. Axar Patel then replaced Khaleel Ahmed and quickly took out Kusal Perera bringing about a Super Over.
Pathum Nissanka and Washington Sundar took the game into its final over, taking them close. But unfortunately for Pathum, Washington Sundar had them both out on the last ball to deny them an unlikely hat-trick opportunity.
Sri Lanka prevailed and took both the match and series win with this win, sealing their first ODI win against India since 2015. As India are currently at the bottom of ICC World Cup rankings they must work on improving dramatically to remain one of the premier teams within this tournament.
Batting
The match was filled with incredible moments from both teams and will remain memorable for years. From stunning catches to powerful sixes, both teams played magnificently. But what truly stole the show was Sri Lanka’s comeback; fans will certainly remember it fondly.
After losing both their set batsmen early on, Sri Lanka rallied with some stellar innings from Avishka Fernando and Kamindu Mendis to take them to 274/7 after 20 overs. Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, India’s bowlers Washington Sundar and Riyan Parag dominated and made scoring runs difficult for visitors like Sri Lanka.
Charith Asalanka quickly followed with another short delivery that was judged LBW against Shivam Dube despite unsuccessful appeal attempts from both batsmen. This sent them back into their pavilion crestfallen.
India bowlers Axar Patel and Washington Sundar continued their excellent form, as they brought down the run-rate to below three. By bowling tightly to force batsmen to defend most deliveries, Axar Patel conceded only two runs in his opening over while Washington Sundar allowed only one.
Axar Patel reduced the run-rate by bowling a maiden over, before returning for his second spell and conceding two singles and a wide. But on his return he also collected an important wicket when Mendis attempted a slog sweep but received top edge that was taken by Pant and provided India with an important breakthrough.
Dunith Wellalage and Janith Liyanage began rebuilding Sri Lanka, but were only able to make minor gains as their innings was restricted to only singles. Soon thereafter, Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Wellalage in the next over with an offspinner delivery which hit him on his helmet and was given out on review; soon thereafter followed Mendis who also failed to reach an adequate total before the overs were over. This left Sri Lanka struggling with scoring an acceptable total as their innings neared its completion.
