DC 210/9 (Ashutosh Sharma 66 not out
After pulling off one of the biggest heists in IPL history, Delhi Capitals batsman Ashutosh Sharma was asked about his mindset during an intense run chase against LSG at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
Sharma continued from where he left off during his debut 2024 season with Punjab Kings, producing another brilliant performance to lift DC from an unnerving 65/5 position and bring them home at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.
Ashutosh Sharma’s stunning 66 off 31 balls propelled Delhi to 211/9 – the highest successful chase by any team at seven or lower in IPL history. The 32-year-old hit five fours and sixes including the winning run off Shahbaz Ahmed to ensure an exciting win and give DC an ideal start to its 2018 season.
As wickets continued to fall regularly, wicketkeeper Ashutosh maintained his calm and composed innings to maintain the required run rate. Even after Digvesh Rathi and Ravi Bishnoi fell quickly to wicketskeeper Chris Waugh, Ashutosh kept his nerve and battled his way through remaining overs to bring victory for Capitals.
Ashutosh was well supported by debutant Vipraj Nigam, who made an impressive 39 off 15 balls to establish himself with some powerful boundary hitting strokes. Nigam fell to Kuldeep Yadav but David Miller made a significant impactful contribution with three fours and two sixes as the Capitals surged past 113/6 in 13 overs with him hitting three fours and two sixes himself to lift LSG to 209/8 after 20 overs. Skipper Rishabh Pant and Pooran fell to Yadav and Ayush Badoni respectively; their unbeaten stand of 57 off 24 balls was enough to sustain LSG to finish in 209/8 overs which ultimately saw LSG finish with 209/8 overs.
Vipraj Nigam 39 not out
Vijay Nigam, a primary school teacher by profession, made sure to travel 30-35 km daily between Haidergarh Tehsil and Barabanki district headquarters so his son Vipraj could get proper cricket training. This sacrifice proved worth while local cricket teams started receiving expert instruction. Vipraj soon established himself as an impressive leg-spinner.
Delhi Capitals took notice of his performance and secured him for Rs 50 lakh during the 2025 auction. Since then he has excelled at middle-over containment.
But he never expected to meet international players during one of India’s marquee cricketing matches in one of India’s Chinnaswamy Stadium games – yet that was exactly what happened! Left-arm spinner Sanjeev Nair found himself bowling against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
DC’s bowler was the sole survivor from RCB’s attack, maintaining an economical bowling rate while remaining unscathed by their barrage.
Vipraj’s match-changing innings of 39 off 15 balls against LSG on Monday captured everyone’s imagination, setting the scene for Ashutosh Sharma to go into god mode and pulling DC out from an all but doomed position at 113/6 into an unprecedented run chase of 210 runs – earning huge applause from fans and becoming an unlikely hero back home in Uttar Pradesh where no player from this area had previously reached Ranji Trophy or IPL levels before Vipraj made history with this performance, his coach Sarwar Nawab told Sportstar about Vipraj’s relentless efforts but that was only just beginning – his hard work will continue towards even greater achievements!
Mitchell Marsh 23 not out)
Marsh took his place at number three following Travis Head’s early dismissal from Australia’s innings, struggling bowlers struggled for penetration. To his rescue at tea time was Marsh who hit two sixes and fours to rescue his side from being in jeopardy; sharing a 114-run partnership with Hanuma Vihari before becoming the sole batsman to pass 50 in Australia’s 306/6 total score.
Marsh is leading this season’s IPL scoring charts with 259 runs in seven innings. Additionally, his performance against Bangladesh in ODI series saw his strike rate reach an impressive 145. Marsh has long been one of the dependable batsmen for Australia; his success this tournament should give him confidence as he attempts to guide them into Champions Trophy final.
Marsh, however, will miss the tournament due to back issues that have not responded well to rehabilitation – according to Cricket Australia in a statement released prior to his announcement as missing.
Marsh is an intimidating figure at the crease, and his power play innings was no different as he hit sixes to long-off and long-on fielders alike. Marsh made use of seven overs given in powerplay to score 50, showing off his destructive skills against spinners as his drives over midwicket were seen only as spectators to his powerful drives over midwicket region. Now having scored three ODI hundreds with an outstanding strike rate of 142% he will surely be missed by his Australian teammates.
LSG 209/8 (Nicholas Pooran 40 not out
LSG were off to an impressive start at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam thanks to fifties from Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran; however, six wickets fell rapidly at the backend.
As the home team struggled to maintain momentum on their quest to 210 runs, Ayush Badoni (9) and Ravi Bishnoi departed early with just 21 balls remaining, leaving Pooran unbeaten on 40 off 31 balls while David Miller added late flourishes with two off-cutters over midwicket for two wickets over midwicket heaved over by Pooran.
Shardul Thakur continues his impressive bowling tally. Delivering an accurate length ball around leg stump to Abishek Porel who attempts to flick towards fine leg. However, only manages a leading edge which travels directly towards Faf du Plessis at long off.
LSG reach 209/8 on a relatively modest batting paradise thanks to David Miller, scoring unbeaten 27 off 19 balls and contributing an unbeaten 27 from 19 balls as their innings comes to a close.
Aiden Markram (25) off 13 balls and Vipraj Nigam (15 off 17 balls) were other major contributors for the hosts.
KL Rahul will miss his side’s match against Mumbai Indians this Wednesday as he celebrates the birth of his first child with wife Athiya Shetty. Rahul announced this news via social media and was welcomed back into DC training soon thereafter; DC teammates sent special wishes his way in a special message from them all. KL and Athiya welcomed their second son together back into training next Tuesday before taking on Mumbai Indians at ACA-VDCA Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
David Miller 27 not out)
David Miller is a dangerous middle-order batsman capable of amassing big totals for his side. A quick-fire batsman who enjoys attacking bowlers, Miller has enjoyed an outstanding career thus far and currently finds himself enjoying one of their highest players as part of South African squad.
Sherfane Rutherford became the first South African player to reach 100 T20 internationals during their third T20I against England at Southampton. At 33-years-old he has shown outstanding form in T20 cricket recently and should play an integral part for Proteas when they defend their Champions Trophy title this year.
Miller is an essential member of South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad and was an integral factor in their run to the final, only losing out against India in the end. Miller’s experience and leadership should play an essential role this year as they look for another trophy win.
Miller has been in fine form for his franchise club and will look to carry this form over into the Indian Premier League. Already having experienced an exceptional career so far, this south African hopes to add even more trophies to his collection.
Miller was injured while fielding in the covers during Paarl Royals’ SA20 match against Durban Super Giants and this is an enormous setback for South Africa as they prepare for the Champions Trophy. Both Miller and Lungi Ngidi are integral parts of South Africa’s Proteas squad; therefore their injuries could have a devastating effect on their chances of victory at this competition.
