Early on, LSG established their authority through their powerplays with half-centuries from Nicholas Pooran and KL Rahul as they posted 214/6. MI kept in contention by scoring with Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera both contributing runs to help maintain MI’s chances in this match.

Nicholas Pooran
Nicholas Pooran’s 75-run knock propelled Lucknow Super Giants to an 18-run victory against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, hitting eight sixes during an explosive innings that included KL Rahul’s 55 and Ayush Badoni’s unbeaten 22 not out for LSG. MI’s bowlers were kept at bay by seamer Nuwan Thushara taking three wickets while spinner Piyush Chawla also achieved success against LSG bowling attacks.
Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis started off the match strong with an opening stand of 53 off 28 balls before their respective wickets fell to Mohsin Khan and Ravi Bishnoi for 38-ball scores of 68 respectively. Ishan Kishan looked off-colour at No. 4, while Naman Dhir made them all come back together by scoring an unbeaten 28-ball 62 to help restore equilibrium to their innings.
MI’s chase began well, amassing 88 for no loss in four overs of their chase. Unfortunately, a collapse in the middle overs reduced any hopes for recovery; they reached 144 for 5 with four overs remaining and even though Rohit and Marcus Stoinis tried hard, their target always proved out of reach.
Mumbai Indians had another disappointing outing on Sunday, winning only two of eight matches and effectively leaving themselves out of playoff contention. Yet there were positives to take from their outing – including some encouraging signs for Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera among other young players. Kishan has seen this season as an opportunity to understand T20 cricket better, which he has taken full advantage of. Though he acknowledges he may not be an ideal opener in T20 cricket yet, he says that he continues learning all the time. Kishan will return against Delhi Capitals for their final match of the season. In the meantime, Kohli plans on preparing for India’s series against Bangladesh in June. He believes he’s in top form and believes he can make a significant impact at this tournament – knowing full well his team needs him for that role. “We will strive to get back to basics as quickly as possible while remaining cohesive as a unit, with results at the forefront.”
Dewald Brevis
The game started slowly as both teams struggled to build any momentum on a damp pitch that caused frequent run outs and catches. Once bowlers began picking up wickets regularly, batsmen Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera made valiant efforts to save MI’s innings from collapse – with both playing key roles in stabilising scoreboard and leading MI towards an acceptable total total score.
Dewald Brevis and Rohit Sharma put on an impressive partnership after rain halted play, scoring 53 runs in the powerplay before Rohit was out for 38 balls at 68 runs – not enough runs were scored by other batsmen to prevent MI finishing last for the third consecutive season.
Mumbai Indians opened with Ishan Kishan and Nehal Waddhera opening up with an excellent partnership, taking them to 57/4 at halfway mark. Tim David’s aggressive batting in the final overs and Ishan’s steady presence enabled Mumbai Indians to reach an impressive total of 144/7.
Mumbai’s bowlers took regular wickets and kept runs at bay. Spinner Piyush Chawla took three, while Mohsin Khan and Marcus Stoinis each picked up two wickets, as did Mayank Yadav, Naveen-ul-Haq and Ravi Bishnoi – as well as Ravi Bishnoi for one wicket each.
Justin Langer was very pleased with the performance of LSG during their game against Edmonton. He felt they performed exceptionally in terms of ball usage, particularly during their powerplay period. Additionally, Langer commended them on how well they dealt with losing starter Quinton de Kock early in the match.
The team’s final position in the points table determines their revenue from BCCI. As they advance up the ranks, their income increases exponentially – so much so that top four teams receive over twice what is allocated to lower-rank teams. Unfortunately for LSG, this meant missing out on being included among these four; nevertheless they will receive equal payment to any fourth-placed team; LSG will now prepare for playoffs; their chances of making top four will depend on how they perform next round.
Naman Dhir
LSG cruised to their sixth win of IPL 2018 on Tuesday thanks to an exceptional all-round performance from Windies batsman Nicholas Pooran. The Windies all-rounder notched 75 off 29 balls – hitting seven hits to the fence and two maximums! He was supported by KL Rahul’s unbeaten 55-ball 62 as LSG chased 229-7 before Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thushara (3/29) and spinner Piyush Chawla (3/30) both claimed three wickets as MI struggled against LSG batsmen
Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis combined for a solid opening partnership of 52 runs in the powerplay before Brevis was dismissed for 23. This precipitated an MI collapse as four wickets fell quickly – Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera both managed singles before Hardik Pandya was caught at long off by Mohsin Khan off Ravi Bishnoi’s bowling.
Ishan Kishan and Naman Dhir were involved in a late push for MI, but were ultimately unsuccessful in closing in. Thushara and Stoinis put on an impressive 93-run stand for the fifth wicket to stabilize MI’s innings before LSG began their chase and won outright.
Pooran stays low to hit it towards the fielder at deep midwicket for two runs before smashing a straight six over extra cover as the crowd cheered him on. Later on in the innings, Krunal Pandya bowls an short and wide delivery and Dhir slaps it back for yet another single. Ayush Badoni then executed an excellent chase of 25 runs with four balls remaining, sending his bat across fine-leg for a single to end LSG’s win streak and move them up into third in the IPL table. BCCI allocates more revenue to teams in the top five spots, so finishing higher will mean more money for MI. With nine defeats out of 10 matches and only four points under their belts at present, MI have struggled mightily this season and will need to win all remaining matches to reach playoff qualification.

Marcus Stoinis
Marcus Stoinis proved the difference as LSG emerged victorious against two of the competition’s largest teams, scoring an all-round half century and opening their bowling attack. It was his maiden 100 of this tournament and has seen them move closer towards qualifying for playoff spots.
He was an ever-present threat in Mumbai’s batting line-up and his performance will garner him plenty of accolades. Australian batsman Alex Carey is an exceptional performer at all levels of cricket; it is great seeing him so strong this season.
Stoinis excelled on the field as well, making a number of crucial saves that proved pivotal to victory. He took an exceptional catch off Rohit Sharma in the 2nd over, before later making an incredible diving save against Nehal Wadhera at short cover – who attempted to flick a ball to fine leg but ended up being caught out instead by short cover! Furthermore, Stoinis picked up Nehal Wadhera’s wicket for just 16 runs when her attempt ended up falling into his hands at short cover!
KL Rahul made an outstanding contribution, sharing in an impressive 109-run partnership with Nicholas Pooran to push home team runs on an otherwise slow Ekana Stadium pitch. Rahul also proved valuable behind the bowling line by picking up three wickets at just 10 runs each.
After making an impressive start, Mumbai’s batting line-up struggled to adapt to the slow pitch and their star pair of Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma couldn’t get going; Hardik was out for a golden duck while Rohit was run-out by Ravi Bishnoi.
Pooran and Deepak Hooda had successfully led their side past the winning line with four balls to spare. Pooran slog-swept a full toss to collect two runs towards midwicket while Hooda hit an off length delivery toward cow corner for FOUR runs – giving him his fourth boundary in four balls!
LSG now have 15 points and are in the top five, and are looking to continue this momentum going into their remaining matches in order to secure a playoff berth.
