Pakistan and England have provided cricket fans around the globe with thrilling moments in ODIs, T20Is, and Test matches for decades, so this match did not disappoint either.
Shan Masood led a spin-heavy Pakistan side that included debutants Noman Ali and Sajid Khan to take full advantage of a slow, green wicket in the Pakistan national cricket team vs England cricket team match scorecard.
Pakistan vs England 1st Test
Harry Brook’s triple-hundred and Joe Root’s 262 set England up for an emphatic victory, but when Pakistan resumed, their second innings collapse left them facing defeat by an innings and 47 runs. Salman and Aamir held out for another 109-run partnership but with Jack Leach taking both wickets within four balls it became inevitable and victory never more than inevitable for England.
As England entered their final day at Multan, their bowlers saw an opportunity to strike further against Pakistan’s top order on an evolving pitch that had started showing some wear but was still providing considerable challenges. A mixture of seam and spin would offer assistance while variable bounce and some degree of deviation created additional hurdles for Pakistan’s batsmen.
Pakistan’s batting had suffered an alarming collapse; they found themselves already trailing by 155 runs at stumps on 492/3 and were facing the possibility of their sixth consecutive Test defeat, their longest ever losing streak since their independence from Britain in 1947.
Jack Leach’s four-wicket haul, his first since returning from eight months away, proved pivotal. Leach lured Shaheen and Naseem into recklessly driving down the ground resulting in an appeal for leg before wicket from Ollie Pope; after missing an opportunity to catch both at short leg, Pakistan were all out for 185 with only one run added onto their total score.
Shoaib Bashir delivered the final no-ball of the match as an unplayable no-ball that skidded down full to right-hander Shaheen’s outside edge and gripped, turned and took an edge from Shaheen’s bat before Jamie Smith dislodged bails to hand England an unassailable lead of 823-7 and series victory – their first in almost 85 years and leaving Shan Masood reeling as captain after all six tests had gone downhill against England while also increasing Pakistan’s home winless streak to 11 games overall.
Pakistan vs England 2nd Test
Pakistan made changes following a disappointing performance in Sharjah and strengthened their squad by including more spinners in their lineup. Babar Azam, Naseem Shah and wrist spinner Abrar Ahmed were dropped while debutant Kamran Ghulam was added. With Multan expected to produce turning pitches, Pakistan’s bowling attack should pose an immediate threat.
England will look to build on their disappointing display from their first match, hoping their middle order – Joe Root, Ben Duckett and Harry Brook in particular – can deliver. Additionally, Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes must step up after poor displays in the previous contest.
On day four, the tourists suffered early wickets: Ollie Pope (22) was dismissed in just the second over of play against off-spinner Sajid Khan while left-arm spinner Noman Ali ran amok by trapping both Joe Root (18) and Harry Brook (16) leg before wicket, prompting both batsmen to review but unsuccessful in having their appeals overruled.
England’s lower order proved its resilience despite early wickets falling to Noman and Sajid, however. A solid 149-run partnership between Saim Ayub and debutant Kamran Ghulam provided some stability to their innings; unfortunately this wasn’t enough as England collapsed to all out at 144 all out with both batsmen taking all seven of their wickets between them.
Noman Ali produced an outstanding bowling performance on the final morning, dismissing England for just 297. The left-arm spinner bowled 14 overs in 14 overs to pick up four wickets, sending back opener Abdullah Shafique (0) and captain Shan Masood (28). Soon afterwards Jack Leach was caught behind for just one off Shoaib Bashir off his own bowling to ensure England did not reach 300 in their second innings and instead trailed by only 152 runs in the three match series.
Pakistan vs England 3rd Test
Rawalpindi was host to the third Test which resulted in a one-sided affair. But that did not reflect either side’s lack of quality or effort – England simply were unprepared for Pakistan’s spinners, which left their batsmen vulnerable against Pakistani spinners, eventually leading to an innings and 66 run victory for Pakistan that leveled up their series 1-1.
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that initially looked similar to Multan where their success lay, yet was soon in trouble due to poor shot selection resulting in wickets falling regularly and leading them downhill.
Ben Duckett (52) and Zac Crawley got England off to an encouraging start, adding 56 for the opening wicket during the morning session before Zac was trapped lbw by Shoaib Malik for 112. England fell further when four quick wickets fell within minutes at lunch, leaving them on 118-6 with four more wickets lost rapidly after lunch.
Spinners Sajid Khan and Noman Ali then took control, as England faltered to just 112 on the final afternoon, giving Pakistan a commanding 77-run advantage in their first innings. Khan collected three of England’s five wickets during this session while Rehan Ahmed and Jack Leach both contributed two scalps each.
Pakistan’s batsmen struggled on an unforgiving pitch during their second innings; Saud Shakeel proved pivotal by scoring unbeaten 134 on an unforgiving surface and helping Pakistan salvage a decent total with vital half century stands with Noman Ali. His performance put hopes back into motion for Pakistan.
Pakistan spinners then produced another impressive performance as they easily defeated England by dismissing them for only 112 runs and scoring an easy nine-wicket win with ease. Pakistan now lead the series 2-1 while England had to deal with another disappointing defeat – yet their captain Ben Stokes acknowledged there may have been positives to take from each encounter they lost.
Pakistan vs England 4th Test
England quickly wrapped up the match when Pakistan were bowled out for 220 in just over one session of cricket, thanks to Aamer Jamal’s fighting half-century and England racing through their innings to seal an incredible Test win in an unprecedented Test battle. A remarkable Test encounter saw England bowl out Pakistan for only 220 before breaking their resistance on day five as England raced through their innings and made history through one of history’s greatest Test matches!
Umpires Billy Doctrove and Darrell Hair ultimately awarded England victory, after ruling that Pakistan team members tampered with the ball. As a protest against their umpire’s ruling, Pakistan refused to return after tea; their game was eventually declared forfeited by umpires Billy Doctrove and Darrell Hair.
England were able to take plenty of positives away from their performance in Multan despite losing, including some key positives from Jack Leach’s bowling attack in the morning – particularly from their batsmen whose resilience shone through, particularly at lower middle order level. Jack’s brilliant bowling spell helped end home side’s fightback quickly.
As Pakistan struggled against an effective home pitch on day four, their chances seemed dim; but a remarkable stand between Salman Agha and Aamer Jamal delayed what had appeared inevitable, but only just.
With England at 153 for seven, victory appeared to be within their grasp until Haris Rauf claimed two of Liam Dawson and Olly Stone wickets to deny England victory.
