RCB have won and maintained their playoff hopes by moving up two spots, currently sitting seventh on the table. Two more victories must be earned before reaching the play-offs.
Virat Kohli delivered an outstanding 47-ball 92 in their 241/7 total after being invited to bat first, while Cameron Green contributed with 46 from 27 balls in the Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore match scorecard.
1. Shikhar Dhawan (c)
Shikhar Dhawan is an Indian opening batsman who represents Delhi Capitals in IPL and regularly features for India in limited-overs cricket. With an outstanding track record in IPL tournament history and one of its greatest run scorers ever seen on display during his stint, Dhawan remains an invaluable member of Indian limited-overs batting.
Dhawan debuted for Delhi during World Cup year 2005 in the Ranji Trophy and ended that season as its highest run-scorer, amassing 461 runs from six matches he participated in. For several seasons following, he dominated domestic cricket while being regularly included as part of India’s limited-overs squad until suffering an injury against Australia in 2011.
Dhawan finally found his form again in 2013. On his Test debut he hit an impressive 187 off 174 balls, earning selection for the Champions Trophy later that year. At first his performance may have been hindered by injuries to Sehwag and Gambhir but soon found his groove scoring two centuries in two matches!
Dhawan failed to replicate his fine form in subsequent ODI series and was dropped for Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Given Dhawan’s advanced age, his chances of making a comeback into India’s limited-overs side appear remote.
Dhawan made a comeback at the 2018 IPL auction by joining Delhi through their RTM card and becoming a key component of their success from previous editions of IPL – scoring back-to-back centuries and holding onto record for most fours per game played – becoming only opener to do so; also becoming first batsman ever to score 5000 IPL runs and hoping to add to his total against Royal Challengers.
2. Harpreet Brar (wk)
Harpreet Brar was instrumental in Punjab’s 179-5 total. He made an impactful late innings cameo, scoring an unbeaten unbeaten 91 off only 57 balls to help recover from an early collapse at M Chinnaswamy stadium. Bowling-wise he also contributed by taking two wickets. Kyle Jamieson (2/32) led Royal Challengers Bangalore’s bowling attack well while Daniel Sams (1/24 and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/34) supported their efforts as they limited Punjab to 176/7 total.
Brar was acquired for Rs 20 lakh at the IPL auction and retained ahead of this season for INR 3.80 crore, playing just two matches in 2015-16 and one this year but making an impression quickly with his left-arm dollies.
As Punjab dominated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Punjab bowler Rashid Khan produced an outstanding performance against them and became the first bowler ever to dismiss Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell all within one innings – hitting sixes and fours during his innings en route to an exciting win!
At Canada, he will look to build on his good form in the coming games and make his IPL debut this season. A great chance for this is when they take on Gujarat in their next home matchup; stay tuned! 3. Arshdeep Singh (wk)
Arshdeep Singh is an impressive left-arm fast bowler from Punjab. In 2018 he helped India win the Under-19 World Cup title, collecting three wickets at an economy rate of two in two matches played against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Following that success PBKS retained him ahead of IPL auction 2021 where he delivered commendable returns season after season; especially as an death over specialist. Arshdeep was instrumental in their team’s resurgence during IPL 2020’s second half.
He continued his impressive form in the following season and earned himself selection to India’s 2022 ICC T20I series against New Zealand. A wicket-taking threat both in the powerplay and at death overs, he is adept at bowling yorkers from around the wicket and also adept at using slower deliveries in death overs.
He has taken nine wickets in 10 matches for PBKS this season, taking notable scalps like those of Jos Buttler and Ajinkya Rahane. Due to this performance he is expected to become an in-demand player at this year’s IPL auction; several franchises may bid on him.
After an underwhelming start to their campaign, RCB will look to turn things around in this match. Led by Faf du Plessis and currently sitting with a negative net run rate, RCB are keen on avoiding repeating their defeat against CSK from last match; they will be further buoyed by the return of AB de Villiers and Mohammad Nabi; however they must still overcome some major hurdles to qualify for playoff spots.
4. Kagiso Rabada (wk)
Kagiso Rabada has previously dispossessed Royal Challengers Bengalis batters and looks set to keep up his fine form for Kings. Aiming a full ball around 137kph on the stumps, Du Plessis attempts to hit big down the ground but only manages a top edge into mid-on who promptly takes an easy catch.
Rabada has had an exceptional start to his season for Punjab Cricket Association and South Africa; amassing 23 wickets while making himself irreplaceable as the youngest bowler ever to reach 300 Test wickets. Punjab made their decision easily!
Faf du Plessis of RCB won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch which offers batsmen significant advantages. Glenn Maxwell and Yash Dayal bowled some excellent spells that limited PBKS batsmen to just 176/6 after 20 overs, thanks to Shikhar Dhawan’s 45 and Shashank Singh’s solid finish which propelled their innings all the way up to 181/6 before they eventually bowled them all out for just 3214.
PBKS currently sit in eighth position in the table with eight points from 11 games, while Royal Challengers Bangalore are top with 16 from nine matches. The winner of this match will take an important step toward qualifying for the play-offs and is therefore crucial for both teams; an RCB victory would put them on track towards reaching semi-finals while one for PBKS could keep slim playoff hopes alive; any victory for either would make their final clash against Mumbai Indians all the more compelling; M Chinnaswamy Stadium has always produced thrilling cricketing moments; we look forward to witnessing action in this match-up!
5. Dinesh Karthik (wk)
Dinesh Karthik is on a mission. A “part-time” cricketer he typically dons the experts cap and sits on commentary panels. Yet Dinesh is determined to prove both himself and the world that he can perform at least as well as many full-timers.
After performing so impressively in India’s Nidahas Trophy final against Bangladesh, which helped them clinch T20 tri-series victory, Karthik has asserted himself as second-choice wicket-keeper ahead of Rishabh Pant. His eight-ball 29 in that final proved that he can deliver when called upon during crucial moments.
Similar is the story for RCB, who were struggling at 68/6 in the 19th over but their captain Karthik kept batting to take them to 167/6 with three balls left in hand – showing his incredible ability in finishing and maintaining calm under pressure which has become one of their hallmarks over time.
Harshal Patel bowled his last over and Lomror made the most of it by hitting an enormous six over cow corner off Harshal’s third delivery! Karthik then hit another six off his next ball before being run out by the keeper; ultimately leading RCB to 217/6 and qualifying for playoffs.
