Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings
Rajasthan Royals host Chennai Super Kings for an all-important clash at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday at 3.30 PM IST and hope to secure a playoff berth with victory. In their last four meetings with CSK, Rajasthan have proven successful; hopefully they can repeat that performance this time around as they have done previously against CSK.
Simarjeet Singh triggers top-order collapse
The Chennai bowlers played their part to keep the Royals to just 141 for five on a difficult surface, losing wickets regularly including opening batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler who fell to Simarjeet Singh’s fast bowler who targeted good length areas without giving batters much room for stride or speed.
Sanju Samson led his side’s chase with precision, scoring an unbeaten 42 off 41 balls off 33 deliveries – supported by youngster Sameer Rizvi who also contributed with quickfire scores – including 42 not out off 33 deliveries from Sameer Rizvi himself! Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali both contributed runs towards helping them reach their target with eight balls to spare.
Samson made an impressive start to the chase, racing to 41 off 16 balls within 16 deliveries during the powerplay before being caught by Ravindra Jadeja near the boundary at the end of an over. Samson then hit six fours during his innings – leading an exhilarating display from openers.
Rajasthan Royals 141 for 5
Chennai Super Kings bowlers led by seamer Simarjeet Singh put on an outstanding collective performance to restrict Rajasthan Royals to just 141 for five in an IPL match here on Sunday. Skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to bat, yet openers Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal struggled against Chennai Super Kings’ disciplined bowling unit; both batsmen were out before Powerplay overs ended while set batsman Riyan Parag also struggled without finding his groove.
Middle overs for the hosts were difficult, with Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad both being dismissed for scores around 20. But, with spinner Yuzvendra Chahal taking an important wicket off Mitchell, their spinners came into their own to restrict runs from scoring freely.
With 39 balls remaining and needing 50 runs from seven overs to complete their chase, Royal Ruislip were struggling at 57-5 and needed some relief quickly. Rovman Powell offered some much-needed respite by smashing Ferguson’s slower delivery off their pads for a flat six and providing his team with some much-needed breathing room.
CSK’s captain then went unbeaten on 42 off 41 balls as CSK easily won their game to boost their playoff chances and increase Sameer Rizvi’s performance, who made eight-ball 15 not out with three fours to seal it all for CSK in style and potentially host Mumbai Indians for their qualifying match on April 28. CSK’s win marked an important one as it helped sign off their home league campaign and earn them the opportunity to host them for their qualifying matchup on April 28.
Sanju Samson of Rajasthan Royals praised his team’s resilience in the face of adversity. He noted that life, too, includes both good and bad days; what matters is showing the right kind of character. Samson particularly applauded Avesh Khan and Trent Boult’s bowling performances, although Shimron Hetmyer wasn’t in his zone today. Still fighting with more games left to go they will strive to improve from their mistakes made today.
Chennai Super Kings 145 for 5
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was instrumental in leading his team to an easy victory, scoring an unbeaten 42 balls with three fours and two sixes en route to an effortless win. Gaikwad took control of the match through each over and was the foundation of CSK’s 147 run chase.
Chennai Super Kings’ initial IPL title came courtesy of Suresh Raina and Muthiah Muralidaran’s phenomenal performances with both bat and ball in 2010. Over four seasons after that, they finished as runners-up; additionally they won Champions League Twenty20 that year by defeating Mumbai Indians in an exciting final matchup.
CSK have proven themselves as one of the premier teams this season despite missing their star player Shane Warne; winning eight out of 14 league matches to secure qualification for the knockout stages and narrowly miss qualifying for them themselves.
The Chennai Super Kings franchise was established in 2008 and have amassed an impressive list of accomplishments since their establishment. Notably, they are one of the most successful teams in Indian Premier League history – winning five championship titles thus far while reaching playoffs 12 times and final 10 times over time. India Cements Limited owns this Chennai-based side.
CSK maintained their position at third in the points table with one game remaining against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, and secured themselves a home match against Hyderabad in the semi-finals – an important one in their attempt to reach the top two of league stage. Unfortunately for Rajasthan Royals though, yet another loss put their hopes of qualifying for playoffs at risk, needing all four remaining matches won in order to stay within striking distance – it will not be easy!
Rajasthan Royals 142 for 5
Rajasthan Royals made up an admirable total in their chase despite losing Yashasvi Jaiswal early. Sanju Samson led their innings with some outstanding hitting, smashing sixes and fours that helped take them close to reaching their target. There was some drama during middle overs when Dhruv Jurel ran out while Shimron Hetmyer was dismissed without scoring, yet Rovman Powell managed to keep his cool and take them home successfully.
Chennai Super Kings began with a speed and spin combination to quickly silence Rajasthan batsmen, led by New Zealand prodigy Rachin Ravindra’s 27 off 18 balls as their starting batsman. Unfortunately for Rajasthan they could not make much progress before drinks break, forcing Simarjeet Singh and Tushar Deshpande into a disciplined spell of their own to limit them to only 141 for 5.
Riyan Parag scored 47 not out off 35 balls as he led RR back onto track in their chase for victory. He was supported by veteran Nandre Burger’s late cameo in which he hit four fours and one six during 20 balls played.
With their target still within striking distance, RR brought in new legs in an attempt to extend the game further. But Anrich Nortje’s incredible delivery struck Dhruv Jurel for six, leaving RR reeling at 121/6 after thirteen overs.
Tim David was somewhat disappointing with the bat, missing several opportunities to score runs easily. His departure brought on an anxious moment as the Royals needed only 12 off their last over. A brilliant run-out by Ravindra Jadeja on Ravi Samson’s throw ended this drama as Tim David was caught obstructing Samson’s throw before Jos Buttler helped RR secure their fifth win of the season – moving above Mumbai Indians and into third position on the points table, two back from second-place Kolkata Knight Riders.
