Mumbai batters overpowered Bengaluru bowlers to seal an emphatic win against them, smashing boundaries left and right without making any errors of note.
RCB 196 (Dinesh Karthik 50) vs. Mumbai 197 (Ishan Kishan 69*, Suryakumar Yadav 50)
Mumbai Indians turned around their season after an uneven start by defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede by seven wickets, thanks to Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav who both scored quickfire fifties to help MI reach its target in 15.3 overs. Kishan made an explosive 34-ball 69 featuring five sixes and seven fours before continuing his form with Rohit Sharma for an unbroken 109-run partnership in pursuit.
RCB are currently ninth in the table and were on course for another loss before Faf du Plessis scored an unbeaten century off 61 deliveries, supported by Rajat Patidar and Dinesh Karthik who both made 50. Unfortunately, however, their bowlers struggled to contain Mumbai batsmen.
Reece Topley, Mohammed Siraj and Vijaykumar Vyshak all conceded more than 20 runs during their spells.
Due to an inadequate showing by their bowlers, the RCB batsmen struggled against MI’s overwhelming start as they amassed a massive total of 197 in 15 overs. Ishan Kishan led their charge with his 23-ball half century while Suryakumar Yadav made his comeback with an unbeaten 52 off 19 balls on his return from injury.
Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians won the toss and decided to bowl. He replaced Glenn Maxwell and Mahipal Lomror with Ishan Kishan and Will Jacks for better balance in his lineup.
Mumbai got off to a flying start in their chase of 325 as they raced past 100/2 within 10 overs, as their openers shared a 101-run stand with Ishan Kishan before Vyshak made an outstanding catch at short third man and Ishan was caught out for just 26. Suryakumar then took control and hit three sixes and two fours during his 53-ball knock.
He then enabled Mumbai to chase down their target with just 4.3 overs left to spare and secure their second win of the season, propelling them up the IPL points table into seventh position and moving them ahead of RCB on five wins and five losses respectively. While Mumbai have enjoyed another dominant performance against their opponent this season, their rival RCB have fallen further behind due to five defeats so far and continue their struggles against targets as they sit just behind Mumbai on this edition’s table; further worsened by losing three consecutive matches against MI further compound their woes against this competition – adding yet more losses against MI only makes matters worse!
RCB 197 (Dinesh Karthik 50) vs. Mumbai 197 (Ishan Kishan 69*, Suryakumar Yadav 50)
RCB had an inauspicious start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) season, losing three straight before finally earning one victory against Delhi Capitals last time out. They come into this match having only managed one victory so far and appear unlikely to qualify for playoff contention. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, sit rooted near the bottom of the table but managed a win against Delhi Capitals last time out to stop their slide and are looking good ahead of this matchup.
Both teams require an emotional lift, making this clash an important test of morale for both.
MI won the toss and elected to bowl first. Jasprit Bumrah quickly struck early as Virat Kohli went for an audacious swing that ended up hitting an inner edge and being caught. Rajat Patidar and du Plessis formed an effective partnership as they got close to 200, but Bumrah struck again in his third over, trapping both batsmen in front of the stumps before finally dismissing both wickets with two deliveries remaining in an over.
Dinesh Karthik then produced an outstanding innings to steer MI past their target. The India stumper hit an unbeaten 50 from 23 balls to enter the 7,000 T20-run club – providing MI’s successful chase with its cornerstone while giving Wankhede spectators something positive to cheer about after being regularly jeered at.
Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav both scored quick-fire fifties to help Mumbai make mincemeat of their 197-run target in 15.3 overs – leaving no chance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Early in their innings, RCB were dealt an early blow by Virat Kohli’s dismissal off an underarm delivery by Hardik Pandya and was out for 61 from 26 balls. From that early setback onward, their batsmen struggled to score runs during the later stages.
Early on, Brendon McCullum and AB de Villiers of Royal Challengers Bangalore made their intentions known right from the outset by hitting sixes off both deliveries that began their innings. A stunning straight drive by de Villiers was followed by another six over long-on off an immediate delivery from Brendon McCullum; who has rapidly established himself as an aggressive lower order batsman during IPL 2024.
