SRH vs PBKS
Punjab Kings were looking to maintain their impressive start to the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but struggled to capitalize on a powerful Powerplay and ended up scoring only 214/5 after losing three wickets after 20 overs. Although their start wasn’t stellar, Rilee Rossouw (49 off 24 balls), Abhishek Sharma (65) and Heinrich Klaasen (42) made appearances that helped salvage some wins for Punjab Kings.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar took an early wicket with Dhawan to give Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) some momentum, but Punjab openers Atharva Taide and Prabhsimran Singh combined for an outstanding first wicket stand of 97 runs with Rossouw missing out on 50 but Jitesh Sharma’s quickfire 32 off 15 helping pass 200 was pivotal for Punjab to cross 200.
Even without their captain Rohit, SRH’s batting was on an excellent trajectory and well ahead of their required rate for most of the game. But after Rashid Khan was dismissed for a duck by Sam Curran and Kagiso Rabada within consecutive overs, their run rate began to slow significantly.
With his bat and ball, Bhuvi collected two wickets in his opening over to keep Punjab’s run-rate under control and bowled a maiden over in his fourth over to further make things difficult for them.
After an initially slow start, SRH quickly reached their target with six wickets remaining thanks to some magnificent batting from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen, adding 47 runs for the fifth wicket before Heinrich was caught by Harshal Patel deep in the penultimate over.
Hyderabad took only five balls to secure victory and put an impressive performance from Hyderabad team SRH on display, winning four out of their seven games and rising from second in the table after their initial defeat to Delhi Daredevils last week. Their victory also ensured they would qualify for playoffs – top four teams will advance into knockout stage play-offs – should one more victory occur between now and Wednesday’s match with Rajasthan Royals at home.
Scorecard
Abhishek Sharma’s unbeaten 66 off 28 balls propelled SRH easily to their 215-run target and into second on the points table, and now holds six wins out of seven at home games under Pat Cummins’ captaincy.
Punjab have lost three consecutive away matches without victory and currently sit ninth on the points table. They will be looking to avoid repeating last season’s dismal display in front of their own crowd and hoping Virender Sehwag can rediscover his form.
Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first. Their opening pair Atharva Taide and Prabhsimran Singh made an excellent start by scoring 61 runs without losing any wicket during their powerplay innings.
However, the bowlers struggled with their line and lengths and were easily exploited by Taide and Prabhsimran’s formidable batting pair. Taide fell just short of reaching 50 runs before Prabhsimran played an impressive innings to help their team reach 214/6 after 20 overs.
SRH replied by losing Travis Head early but Heinrich Klaasen came out to play an impressive part, hitting 29 off 16 balls. Nitish Reddy provided vital support, striking 32 off just 15 deliveries.
Even during some wayward overs, SRH’s bowlers managed to maintain control of the run flow until the very end and prevent any comeback by Kings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar led their success with two wickets taken while T Natarajan delivered with impressive left-arm spin allowing only 10 runs from his final over.
SRH never trailed, thanks to some brilliant batting from Sharma and Reddy. Their 95-run partnership saw Sharma hit fours off every delivery while Reddy unleashed two sixes during their incredible knock. It will go down as one of the finest games ever seen between these teams; both still hope to make the playoffs, so any victory for either side would provide a huge boost going into their respective last stages of this tournament.
Highlights
SRH overcame a 4 wicket deficit to defeat Punjab Kings and claim second position on the points table.
Abhishek Sharma’s stunning 66 off 28 balls helped SRH overcome their slow start and keep pace. Although opener Jonny Bairstow departed early, the hosts still raced through the powerplay in six overs to score an impressive 84 for 2, despite losing Sam Curran in the seventh over. Nitish Reddy used his feet efficiently at number four to keep their required run rate under control with Heinrich Klaasen on one end of the pitch.
Final Score
The match proved to be an intense contest as two sides battled until the very last wicket fell. Hyderabad eventually came out victorious as they defeated Punjab by four wickets with Abhishek Sharma scoring an outstanding 28-ball 66 to set up their chase of a big total and then put up an outstanding defensive performance to ensure no further wickets fell.
SRH’s chase started off slowly when Travis Head was dismissed for a golden duck in just the first over, yet Abhishek Sharma didn’t let this setback derail their chase as he quickly hit three sixes and reached 50 in just 21 balls before Heinrich Klaasen joined in to ensure there were no further hurdles in their run chase.
Henrich Klaasen then unleashed three sixes to maintain the required run rate before being dismissed by Harpreet Brar with just seven runs remaining on the scorecard for their visitors to achieve victory. Sanvir Singh joined Samad in hitting two four and sixes as they got ever closer to reaching their target of 120 runs.
At the close, it was all about keeping the scoreboard ticking over, and Abhishek Sharma delivered by hitting an epic six over long-on to seal victory for Sunrisers Hyderabad and take them up to second spot in the points table while Punjab finish ninth.
Punjab stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma was dissatisfied with his team’s batting display. While they posted an impressive total on the board and thought they could defend it, Jitesh expressed pride for their effort as all departments performed admirably; specifically praising bowlers’ efforts saying they performed exceptionally in all fields; adding that he’ll look forward to playing more matches with this squad in future.
