The Icc U19 Cricket World Cup provides an ideal stage for up-and-coming cricket talents to shine, often helping launch some of the biggest names in cricket history. As its 2024 edition begins play, here is a look back on its rich history.

Qualification
The top ten teams from the previous edition qualified automatically, along with hosts Zimbabwe and five winners of regional qualification tournaments. Of the remaining 16 teams selected via multi-stage selection process, three from each of four groups advanced to Super Six stage while fourth placed teams in each group will face one from another group in placement stage play offs – Australia is reigning champion having won it four times while India have five championship titles under their belts.
The tournament will be hosted across five locations in Zimbabwe and Namibia: High Performance Oval Windhoek will serve as host venue, while Queens Sports Club Harare and Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe will each seat up to 4,000 spectators.
Australia are the defending champions and look likely to capture another victory when the tournament kicks off on January 15 and runs through February 6.

Group stage
At the 2026 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, 16 teams will battle it out in groups of four. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super six stage while any fourth-placed team must participate in a placement match for that group so as to guarantee a full 16-team draw at tournament’s conclusion.
This tournament first ran in 1988 before it was discontinued for 10 years until resuming in 1998 with an updated format. Now held every two years and featuring a round-robin format where each team plays each other once; teams finishing last in their respective groups play in a knockout Plate competition, with winners qualifying for the final.
At this year’s tournament, there will be many promising young players to keep an eye on, such as India opener Sameer Minhas and Pakistan spinner Ali Raza who both participated in the Asian U-19 Championship recently and showed great potential.
Australia’s Oliver Peake should also be kept an eye on, having helped Melbourne Renegades lift the BBL title last year and now becoming a key figure for his nation.
Group stage action will feature 24 matches in total, with Zimbabwe hosting 16 and Namibia eight respectively. Bulawayo Queens Sports Club and Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe will host 16 of these contests while Windhoek Cricket Ground and High Performance Oval in Namibia will host eight.
The ICC U19 World Cup offers young players a fantastic opportunity to showcase their talent on a global stage and build experience, while giving fans an invaluable glimpse of the future of football and potential new stars. Therefore, teams should make sure they select suitable players for this tournament.
Zimbabwe and Namibia, who qualified automatically, hope to improve upon their performances from previous editions of this tournament.
Still, many other talents should be kept an eye out for, including India opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Pakistan fast bowler Zafar Ahmad. Sooryavanshi could develop into a superstar while Ahmad has shown great promise in this season’s PSL tournament.
This week will mark the 16th edition of ICC U19 World Cup since its introduction in 1988 – pitting young cricket players from top nations against each other over three weeks of competition.
Semi-finals
After an exciting Super Six stage, the ICC U19 World Cup has come down to two teams competing for one semi-final spot at Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo on Sunday. England and Afghanistan already secured their spots through wins, leaving India and Pakistan vying for that last slot at Queen’s Sports Club – with India hoping that an outright win from Group 2 would give them enough net run rate advantage over Pakistan to progress past Group 1. A win from either team would secure their passage into the last four.
