Day 1
At an exhibition match that showcased India cricket’s future, India A swept aside their young counterparts from India D and came away victorious.
From Shams Mulani’s all-round brilliance to Ricky Bhui’s gritty fighting century, this Duleep Trophy contest had it all: drama, skill and passion all come together perfectly in this memorable contest that gave spectators a taste of why domestic tournaments can be such a spectacle.
India A’s lower order responded magnificently after losing five wickets early, to reach a total of 290 runs in their second session of play.
Harshit Rana excelled as their star bowler with 4/51 off 17.3 overs; Vidwath Kaverappa and Arshdeep Singh each contributed 2 wickets each to this total.
India D were looking hopeless at 93/5, but all-rounder Shams Mulani’s 88 and Tanush Kotian’s half century led them back into contention as they posted 288/8 at close.
Tilak Varma produced an outstanding innings with his 113, with Shashwat Rawat also contributing with 50 runs.
However, India D’s fortunes changed dramatically on day three. Facing an impossible target of 488 runs to chase down, India D would face an uphill struggle in reaching it.
They started off strongly though with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhimanyu Easwaran building an impressive partnership – until Jaiswal played an inexperienced shot off a wide delivery from Kuldeep that gave an easy catch to Rohit Sharma at slip.
India D’s innings imploded, as Riyan Parag and Kumar Kushagra were caught at short cover before Ruturaj Gaikwad was stumped off a short delivery from Saransh Jain and later leg-before decision by Kuldeep’s spin turned up the heat further on him.
Fans witnessed an exciting match full of drama; domestic cricket is indeed a laboratory for young cricketers to hone their craft and showcase their abilities; should domestic cricket provide enough talent and enthusiasm then the Duleep Trophy could provide them a platform from which national team setup could prevent careers from being launched or curtailed!
Day 2
Rural Trust Development Stadium was home to an unforgiving pitch, offering unpredictable turns and uneven bounce.
It also proved the perfect setting for an epic battle between experienced players from India A and India D’s young squad of fiery youngsters – something India A’s steady performance led up against!
Mayank Agarwal and Dinesh Karthik, fast bowler who has featured internationally as well as Hanuma Vihari were all there for an intriguing contest, yet this match didn’t turn into one about just players – rather it became about how well both played their parts and each contributed to an entertaining encounter.
India A’s batsmen soon settled down after an uneventful opening half hour of play, led by Abhishek Sharma and Devdutt Padikkal’s century stand, from 10 for 1 back up.
However, both players then fell back against Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep’s express pacers — who both appear likely for selection to national teams — proving why India A suffered.
India A had not finished their batting yet and posted an impressive total, which showcased great effort by their batsmen to remain in the game despite some difficult bowling performances by India A’s opponents. Unfortunately for India A, their bowlers made things too challenging for their batsmen to stay alive in this contest.
Second innings drama really began to play out with Axar Patel’s rescue act – including an 84-run ninth wicket partnership between him and Arshdeep Singh – saving India D’s Duleep Trophy match against India A from becoming one-sided.
Shams Mulani’s all-round brilliance with an excellent all-round 89 and an amazing bowling display (3/117) earned him the player of the match award, while Ricky Bhui’s fightback hundred demonstrated that even 22-year-old players can be formidable forces when given their opportunity – his combination of defensive resilience with powerful attacking shots showcased his versatility as an opener and earned him further opportunities to develop as cricketers. It was truly special innings from youngster Ricky who deserves further opportunities to develop as cricketers!
Day 3
India A vs India D Duleep Trophy match was more than just another cricket game; it was an opportunity for young talent to showcase itself.
From brilliant batting, disciplined bowling, and sharp fielding to breathtaking batting performances from Ricky Bhui, Tanush Kotian, and Shams Mulani who all showed just how exciting the future of Indian cricket may look like, many young Indians made their case for national selection during this competition.
India A’s openers faced immense pressure as they set about chasing such an expansive target. Abhishek Sharma – already well known in IPL circles – looked promising early.
However, Umran Malik made short work of the middle order to knock India A off their game; Abhishek fell victim to Umran Malik’s powerful bouncer which took out Abhishek for 10.
India A finished day two at 10-1 with Abhishek making 28 not out and still at bat!
Mayank Agarwal, with over 7,000 first-class runs to his credit, played an invaluable role. Partnered with Tamil Nadu southpaw Sai Sudharsan who had made headlines domestically, he provided crucial stability at second wicket before Malik struck with a devastating fast bowling spell and split them apart with just six deliveries for 53 runs at second wicket.
After losing three early wickets, Harshit Rana and Vidwath Kaverappa battled hard before eventually conceding that their target would always be too lofty for them to chase. With just an hour to go before bat-off began in earnest, drama reigned supreme!
India A secured an innings victory against India D with Riyan Parag, Khaleel Ahmed and their bowlers exerting consistent pressure that prevented India D from building momentum.
Aaqib Khan and Khaleel Ahmed each took three wickets while Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani chipped in with two wickets each to seal their team’s triumphant win.
India A have won their fourth consecutive match this tournament; now standing a good chance of advancing to the semifinals through strong performance with both bat and ball performance!
Day 4
Cricket in India transcends borders; it connects generations from youngsters playing gully cricket to grandparents glued to the television screen.
The Duleep Trophy provides an avenue for India’s young talent to shine; India A v India D was no different, with performances by Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian showing just how narrowly success and failure can exist; performance such as these showed how fierce competition exists for national selection despite domestic talent’s presence.
After a slow start, India A amassed 488 in their first innings on a pitch that favoured bowlers from the outset. Pratham Singh led their efforts with an outstanding 122 that combined defensive resilience with attacking strokes while Tilak Varma added stability; Harshit Rana contributed with 51 runs but ultimately their target seemed unrealistic.
Tanush Kotian, Shams Mulani, Khaleel Ahmed and Riyan Parag took turns taking wickets while maintaining tight lines to restrict batsman’s scoring.
Karun Nair’s watchful 35 kept India D’s required rate under control until being caught off Kuldeep for just 13 runs by Kuldeep to end any hope for comeback for India D.
Axar Patel then unleashed a 48-ball flurry, and formed a 60-run partnership with Washington Sundar. However, Tushar Raheja from Karnataka then struck, inducing an outfield catch at slip and India D were all out for just 301, with just 11 runs ahead in their innings.
Kuldeep finished with 6 wickets and was duly awarded Player of the Match honours, but this match was won by Duleep Trophy itself – an arena for India’s brightest young cricketers to showcase their abilities and make their case for national selection.
