After their dismal tour of New Zealand, India resumed their home season on a much more positive note with a commanding victory over West Indies at Delhi.
Shubman Gill led India for the first time at home and scored almost every time; KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Siraj all played well – including KL Rahul with his bat and Ravindra Jadeja with her ball skills.
As for West Indies it was another forgettable performance; disciplined when necessary but woefully inadequate with bat and ball usage compared with what Indian players achieved on home ground.
Tourists were expected to provide an effective challenge, yet they fell woefully short in both innings. With an experienced batting lineup like John Campbell and Shai Hope leading them, their expectations were raised high; unfortunately they never came anywhere close to meeting their target of 286 and were bowled out for just 248 runs in reply – their lowest total since 2022!
Though John and Shai both scored centuries, it never felt as if their opposition could match it at all.
Windies’ performance against India was lackluster yet again and have yet to win a Test anywhere since 2002, whether on home or away soil.
They must work on improving their batting department quickly with some key players stepping up quickly – especially Skipper Roston Chase, Jomel Warrican and vice-captain Khary Pierre who must improve as quickly if visitors wish to remain competitive at this stage of development.
Shubman Gill will lead India into their home tournament for the first time ever on home soil, Dhruv Jurel may take over wicketkeeping duties from Rishabh Pant, who remains out with a fractured foot sustained during Manchester test match, Avesh Khan will make her ODI debut, while Dhruv Kumar and N Jagadeesan form part of an all-spin quartet in this squad.

ODIs

Shubman Gill’s India made an excellent start to their home season under Shubman Gill, disposing of West Indies with an emphatic seven-wicket win on the final morning in Delhi.

Tests
Test cricket is an extended affair spanning five days and multiple innings that tests teams’ endurance, skill and stamina over an extended period of time.
As this form of the game carries more ranking points and national teams are usually fierce competitors when participating in test format, it remains one of its premier forms. India boasts a proud track record when competing at test cricket level;
Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane currently head up their national cricket squad and have made history since taking their places alongside legendary names from previous teams that had played Test format games against them in earlier tournaments.
India are currently facing an enormous task: they need to defend a World Cup, prepare for ODI series and organize an expansive domestic T20 league – it may be hard for them to find time to work on their game effectively during such a demanding time, yet failing to do so could prove costly in future tournaments.
India must understand that their Test matches against West Indies are of critical importance for them in terms of getting back on track after their disappointing loss to New Zealand, and understanding what must be done to resume winning ways. But some questions must still be addressed before moving forward effectively.
The primary concern for selectors should be whether their best players have the required preparation to excel in Test matches over an extended period.
With so much talent focused on white ball tournaments like IPL and state T20 leagues, it could be that modern-day Test batsmen lack experience to excel in this format.
Spinners selected for the Kolkata Test – Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja – have had limited Ranji Trophy experience which severely limits their ability to adapt their bowling tactics depending on pitch conditions. While Jadeja is an outstanding spinner, he does not possess fingerspinner capabilities that enable him to bowl with speed on turning pitches while drifting on flatter tracks against batsmen.
