Rajasthan Royals (RR) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
The two teams have met 31 times in IPL history, with Rajasthan Royals winning 14 of them and KKR winning 15. The remaining two matches ended in a tie.
RR beat KKR in both of their last meetings this season to go top of the standings, and a win here would give them an almost-unassailable six-point lead over the Delhi Capitals (DC).
Riyan Parag will take charge of RR for the first time at the Barsapara Stadium – a game that could well decide the fate of both sides’ playoff chances.
He has little to shout about a side that lost its first three games of the tournament and is yet to score more than 200 runs in an innings at home.
Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 107 off 60 balls led RR to 224/8 in their two-wicket win against the Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Saturday.
It was the highest successful run chase in IPL history and Buttler was named Player of the Match for his efforts. However, a sloppy fielding performance from RR’s bowlers ruined their hopes of an outright win.
RR’s spinners struggled to control the middle phase, with both Moeen Ali and Shezniyath Theekshana misfiring. Wanindu Hasaranga’s pace was erratic and he gave away easy release shots.
RR have a strong batting unit and a good mix of pace and spin, but the absence of a quality allrounder means they’re not guaranteed to make the playoffs.
KKR are still in contention for a top-four finish but need to string together back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Their win against DC showed signs of life with Andre Russell and Sunil Narine finding their groove. They’ll need to replicate these performances at home if they want to keep their playoff dream alive.
This will be the final home game for KKR before they travel to Mumbai to play DC on March 31, and then to Ahmedabad to face Gujarat Titans (GT) on April 6.
They will be without injured batsmen Sanju Samson and Darren Bravo. This will be a big test for their depth.
RR vs KKR
The Rajasthan Royals will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record against the Kolkata Knight Riders. The Royals have won both of the two matches against KKR this season and they have also won both of their home games.
In the last match, RR scored 224/8 to win by two wickets and Jos Buttler was awarded Player of the Match for his superb performance. He hit 10 fours and five sixes in his unbeaten 107-ball innings.
However, KKR’s bowlers did their best to deny RR a historic win. They bowled well in the first innings and managed to restrict them to 152/8. They also bowled well in the second innings and managed to reduce RR’s total to just 132/6.
KKR had a decent start to the tournament and they looked like they would make it to the top four. They won three of their first four matches and they were on the verge of making it to the play-offs.
However, they lost two of their next matches and they were pushed out of the playoff race.
This was a disappointing result for the KKR and their fans as they were hoping for a strong finish to the competition. The team will need to perform better if they want to compete for the final playoff spot.
It is hard to find a replacement for the experienced spin duo of Ravi Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, who were let go ahead of the auction.
Despite their absence, KKR’s spinners have done well to pick up wickets this season. Theekshana Jaiswal and Pawan Negi are also doing a good job of controlling the middle overs.
But KKR’s batting has been the main problem and they have struggled to score runs this season. The team is relying on the big-hitting power of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, but they need someone to chip in with a few key innings.
KKR has won three IPL titles and they are one of the most established franchise teams in the Indian Premier League.
Their winning streak against RR has brought them closer to the top four and they have won both of their previous matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
The Royals need to improve their batting and the bowlers need to work hard to contain KKR’s big-hitting batsmen.
This will be a high-scoring game between the two teams. The teams have played 32 matches against each other in the Indian Premier League since 2008 and they have an even head-to-head record. The Royals have won 14 matches and the Knight Riders have won 16 times.
