With both RCB and GT slipping down the table, a win for either will provide them with some breathing room to climb back into middle tier of standings with an impressive showing at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Shubman Gill and David Miller had an important 61-run partnership for Gujarat Titans to get them off to an excellent start, as reflected in the Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Gujarat Titans match scorecard.
RCB 152-6
Faf du Plessis helped RCB get off to an outstanding start in their run chase thanks to his amazing innings at M Chinnaswamy stadium, reaching his half century in just 18 balls, the second fastest for any batsman at that stadium. However, that wasn’t all; du Plessis went on to achieve his 132nd T20I fifty in just 23 balls!
Josh Little eventually dismissed Kohli for an impressive unbeaten 142 off 107 balls with 10 fours and two sixes – this incredible effort being supported by Dinesh Karthik with whom Kohli shared an equally excellent 57-run partnership to ensure there were no further setbacks for their home side.
At one point it appeared RCB were on track for an easy win after reaching 92/1 in the powerplay, yet something strange happened: They lost five wickets within two overs to slip from 92/1 to 111/5 – an unexpected event!
Will Jacks was caught by Shahrukh Khan for one run at long-on, before Noor Ahmed took three wickets in two overs – Rajat Patidar (2), Glenn Maxwell (4) and Cameron Green (1) were all out by himself! With their hopes for an easy win vanishing rapidly.
Karthik then took charge, striking two sixes over long-off and deep midwicket off Mohit Sharma to put the visitors under pressure and smashing another six on the first ball of his next over to get things underway.
Home side’s chase of 152/6 went smoothly as they raced towards victory with ease in 14 overs, and ensured playoff chances wouldn’t be jeopardised as they secured the win by 4 wickets to move into seventh position with an improved net-run rate. For Gujarat though, this will come as a bitter blow as their chances of reaching top four finish appear dimmering by picking up wins in their remaining games if they hope to remain relevant; both teams will meet back up again for one final league clash of 2018; don’t miss that action!
Gujarat Titans 87-5
Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore played out an intense Indian Premier League 2024 playoff clash that came down to a single game – where the winner would decide their destiny and who would join their respective rosters in the Indian Premier League 2024 playoffs. Both teams had been competing well recently, so winning this matchup would determine their destiny; yet ultimately it was Royal Challengers Bangalore that emerged victorious, defeating their arch-rival and moving them up into seventh position, while dropping Gujarat Titans down one slot to ninth position overall.
Rashid Khan won the toss and elected to field first, without making any changes to their successful batting XI from previous matches. Opening pair Robin Uthappa and Ruturaj Gaikwad of Gujarat Titans, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, and Shivam Dube were unaltered from previous performances.
CSK started their ball attack off quickly as they quickly scored runs and constructed an innings. Lockie Ferguson struck early by dismissing dangerous player Shubman Gill but CSK managed to retain momentum by picking up Vijay Shankar within their next over.
However, Gujarat suffered another blow when KL Rahul mistimed a pull shot and was caught by Darshan Nalkande at long-on. Batters then struggled to keep pace with required run rate and ended up falling short by 33 runs of their target goal.
Despite initial disappointment, the Titans managed to post an impressive total thanks primarily to Marcus Stoinis’ extraordinary half-century that featured six fours and two sixes, as well as his 73-run partnership with KL Rahul for third wicket (33 off 31 balls). Nicholas Pooran made an invaluable 32-ball contribution as well.
Moeen Ali and Yash Thakur both collected three wickets each for RCB in the bowling department, the former dismissing both Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill while AB de Villiers was removed in just his second over by Thakur. Cameron Green outwitted Sai Sudharsan before finishing up Gujarat at 19-3 after only five overs of play.
The chase was not straightforward as Royal Challengers Bangalore’s spinners were on top form and bowlers regularly picked up wickets, stretching into the final over of both teams’ chase. Both RCB and Gujarat Titans struggled to maintain momentum throughout the match but ultimately, RCB managed to pick up an important win and move into seventh position on the table while Gujarat Titans fell one spot to ninth as their three straight losses put them out of playoff contention; though still holding eight points and an excellent net run rate of 3.33 they remain in good position to qualify for playoff qualification despite losing three outings this tournament so far this tournament.
Final Score
RCB batsmen did well enough in their innings. Even though Faf was lost early on, Kohli and Jacks still managed to make sure RCB were always in control; these two went at run-a-ball from powerplay onwards to amass 63 off their powerplay partnership and give RCB an overwhelming lead. Gujarat could not keep pace with such scoring rates and failed to take any wickets in the latter stages; which allowed RCB to move up two spots into fifth position of the table; taking another big step closer towards playoff qualification!
