Sri Lankan cricket team
Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) cricket team has been playing Test matches since 1982 and boasting some of the greatest cricket players such as Aravinda de Silva, Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Rangana Herath Kumar Sangakkara Chaminda Vaas and Duleep Mendis on its side since that time.
Their achievements include winning several international tournaments such as 1996 Cricket World Cup and 2014 ICC World Twenty20 titles respectively.
Pakistan was a close match; Sri Lanka were favoured to win but fell just short. Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman made for an excellent opening partnership; however, Pakistan’s other batsmen failed to produce. Unfortunately it marked an unfortunate end to its campaign.
Australia defeated Bangladesh easily in their semi-final, led by Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry who both shrugged off Bangladeshi bowling to score 136 before setting about their chase, which they accomplished without much difficulty.
Sri Lanka opened their tournament by defeating South Africa and Bangladesh, but were then drawn against Bangladesh and India, leading them to require victory over Pakistan by an overwhelming margin in order to qualify for the final.
But, ultimately, this match fell prey to Mother Nature. Persistent rain forced play to be abandoned before any balls had even been bowled – leaving Sri Lanka out of contention for qualification for the final.

Last time they met at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan edged out Sri Lanka in an exciting contest. Both teams were striving to advance into the semi-finals but couldn’t stop Pakistan’s impressive batting charge.
Pakistan claimed victory with an incredible total of 271 runs courtesy of their batsmen, led by Babar Azam and Sahibzada Farhan who each scored centuries.
Farhan Akhtar hit nine fours and five sixes during his innings while Azam outdid himself by hitting 11 fours and sixes! Together they took apart Sri Lanka bowlers with ease while creating an amazing partnership between themselves.
Pakistan came out victorious over Sri Lanka to secure their spot in the quarter-finals of T20 World Cup; though Sri Lanka will have much to consider before facing New Zealand.
Sri Lanka made an impressive start to their innings with Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne both scoring half-centuries; however, their middle order collapsed significantly – leaving them facing an unlikely fourth-place finish in the tournament.
Sri Lanka have several areas they must improve before heading into the World Cup, including their middle-order. They must find ways to deal with collapses more effectively in future and avoid them at all costs, while bowling has been an issue throughout this tournament.

The Sri Lankan national cricket team is an international professional cricket team representing Sri Lanka on an international stage. Playing Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International matches governed by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board; originally known as Ceylon they first competed in an ODI match during 1926-27 and now enjoy full membership status within ICC with Test, ODI, and T20I status respectively.

Sri Lanka experienced several disappointing performances during the 2026 Cricket World Cup and were accused of playing below their standards, prompting a protest outside of Sri Lanka Cricket Headquarters with participants calling for its board president, Shammi Silva, to resign their positions as a result of this protest. Shammi Silva eventually did just that!
Angelo Mathews has served as Sri Lanka’s coach since Mahela Jayawardene left in 2017. Since taking up this post in 2017, he has led his side to victory in various tournaments – such as 2021 ICC T20 World Cup and 2018 ICC Champions Trophy as well as several limited-over internationals against Pakistan and South Africa. Furthermore, in addition to coaching duties he also leads in run scoring across formats for Sri Lanka.
