Vaibhav Suryavanshi misses his 150
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s 171-ball innings was instrumental in India’s easy 234-run win against UAE in the Under-19 Asia Cup opener.
The 14-year-old from Samastipur, Bihar was in devastating form against UAE bowlers hammering 14 sixes to set a record number of maximums in an Under-19 innings innings; an outstanding display by this youngster and definitely someone to look out for going forward.
Aaron George began the match steadily and was looking forward to posting a big total on the board, supported by Aaron Hoyle – but it ultimately wasn’t enough as wickets kept falling and only managed to reach 433/6 after 50 overs.
India U19 skipper Ayush Mhatre then came out and was at his devastating best, smashing nine fours and seven sixes to put India U19 in commanding position in the match.
Indian youngsters showed great talent, all-round performance despite playing on an uneven pitch that gave spinners an edge.
India A began the second session by dominating play, battering UAE bowlers into submission with ease and hitting two fours from Harshit Kaushik and Jitesh Sharma respectively, to make full use of conditions by smashing only 13 runs off one over by Ramandeep Singh; next over, UAE opener Mayank Rajesh Kumar attempted a slog-sweep but missed it completely, being caught by Nehal Wadhera at deep midwicket for four runs down. A magnificent catch there by Nehal Wadhera reduced UAE’s deficit by four runs!
Naman Dhir is dismissed
India A vs Pakistan A match at the 2025 Asia Cup was going smoothly until one moment shifted the balance of play dramatically.
Pakistan spinner Saad Masood made headlines when he dismissed Indian batter Naman Dhir with an impressive relay catch, only for third umpire to rule it out instead. This decision left both players and spectators stunned, leaving all scrambling for answers as to what went wrong.
As soon as the third umpire ruled that Naman Dhir had not taken a clean catch, tension escalated further. His decision was based on a new rule which states a fielder may only touch the ball while airborne outside their boundary boundary and must then stay inside until dead ball occurred. After hearing this ruling, Indian contingent quickly ran towards on-field officials to clarify what had transpired.
Even amid heated exchanges, both teams were still able to finish their group matches with victories despite an intense rivalry, including an exciting match-up between neighbouring India and Sri Lanka in which young India wicketkeeper-batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi notched up his second highest T20 score ever with an unbeaten knock of 144 off 42 balls – an Indian record in T20 cricket!
After their match at Doha’s West End International Cricket Stadium, both teams parted ways without exchanging handshakes or greetings.
It was at this point that UAE captain Muhammed Waseem admitted his team’s lack of concentration during their chase attempt and their inconsistent batting. He blamed their defeat on opponents whose bowlers were so adept at targeting each batter individually.
Waseem was pleased with his team’s overall performance despite their loss. He noted that they created opportunities, yet were ultimately unable to capitalize on them.
Waseem suggested his batsmen were outplayed by their opponent’s bowlers; hence they should learn from any errors going forward. Furthermore, Waseem was impressed with Pakistani batsmen; believing them superior in all areas.
Alishan Sharafu is caught
UAE were set for an impressive total in their second innings after an impactful batting display from captain Muhammad Waseem and set bat Alishan Sharafu. Sharafu, 23, has quickly established himself as an integral middle-order player, striking 55 off 47 balls after performing well against Mitchell Santner before sending Lockie Ferguson’s 140kph delivery for six and keeping calm against Matt Henry’s test of concentration.
However, in the 15th over, he was finally dismissed off a short ball from a New Zealand pacer. While looking for an enormous six over long-off, Mark Chapman at deep midwicket caught it instead and relayed it to Daryl Mitchell who completed the catch, sending UAE bowlers reeling.
Chapman made one of the greatest catches ever witnessed in T20 cricket and earned himself the Man of the Match award, also helping ensure UAE would not go past 150 runs in total.
The UAE team relies heavily on expatriate players from South Asia and beyond, reflecting their population breakdown of 88% expats and 60-70% South Asians.
This despite having a robust domestic structure with club leagues, ICC National Premier League competition, and an ECB academy – with selection through performance being implemented within these structures so national squad picks may be taken from pools of eligible expatriates based on consistent form allowing an opportunity to increase national representation amid associate-level competition.
Although UAE boasts some of the finest stadiums among associate members, they have failed to make an impactful statement at an international level. While competing alongside full members India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Asia Cup events they have yet to reach the final stages.
With emphasis placed by ECB on domestic game and its commitment to improving local talent; UAE may benefit in the long run; their transformation underway is evidenced by players such as Ayub Khan and Sohaib Khan who represent homegrown talent.
Suyash Sharma is out
Sohaib Khan hit Suyash Sharma’s googly for six, as the young spinner leaked 48 runs without collecting a wicket in their last match. They must learn from this experience and strive to improve for future games.
UAE won 131/3 in 19.2 overs (Esha Oza 72*) against India A 130/9 by seven wickets with their calculated and clinical chase culminating in victory with four balls to spare, taking them top of their group with just one match left to play.
India A had difficulty starting their innings as Samaira Dharnidharka’s sharp new-ball spell by Samaira Dharnidharka rocked their top order, with Humaira Kazi and Tejal Hasabnis departing cheaply within the second over to leave them at 9/2.
Dinesh Vrinda tried his best with 16 before Dharnidharka returned into attack quickly enough; her wicket-taking delivery saw off Heena Hotchandani in 18th over.
Harshit Kaushik attempted to slog-sweep the ball but mishit it completely and hit his own stumps – leaving India A struggling at 30/4 after 20 overs.
Nehal Wadhera was brought on to bowl the next over, giving away seven runs including three sixes. With tight lines that limited batsmen’s space, Nehal was an effective left-arm bowler.
Gurjapneet Singh strikes again! Alishan Sharafu was dismissed with a brilliant catch by Gurjapneet Singh when the short ball hit Sharafu off guard while trying to flick it leg side. Gurjapneet caught this quick wicket effortlessly!
Ramandeep Singh had provided some relief for India A’s innings but his final over proved costly for the visitors. Syed Haider attempted to slog sweep but could not get the connection right and ended up hitting it straight into a long-on fielder, dropping their score to 151/7 with six overs to go. They will hope that they finish this innings strongly so as to reach their required target of 2117 runs with an impressive total.
