ODI cricket is played between teams representing full members and Associate members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), typically 50 overs per innings limited overs games with maximum overs permitted per innings. ODIs represent the pinnacle of international cricket and count towards World Cup qualification and rankings.

T20I
Afghanistan national cricket team is an international cricket team from Afghanistan, formed as a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Since joining, they have competed in multiple Twenty20 International tournaments and earned themselves a spot in 2024 World Cup tournament. So far they have played seven T20Is with 12 wins and 2 losses recorded as results.
In June 2018 at Bengaluru Stadium, Afghanistan national cricket team will face India for their maiden Test match ever at Test level. Both sides will battle hard for victory.
Afghanistan Cricket Board hopes that by 2025 their Test team can become consistent while becoming top six ODI and three T20I squads simultaneously.
Though Afghanistan didn’t qualify for the 2017 Cricket World Cup, they have made impressive gains since. Since qualifying for World Cricket League Championships three consecutive times (WCLCs), winning three World Cricket League Championships to attain One Day International status and qualify as an ODI team.
Furthermore, Afghanistan competed in 2015 Cricket World Cup qualifier matches against Uganda, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Scotland before moving forward into tournament.

In July 2016, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) unveiled their strategic plan and goals for their country. ACB CEO Shafiq Stanikzai stated their objective as being one of six teams on ODI rankings by 2019; as well as reaching top three status in T20Is and ODIs by 2025.
Afghanistan cricket team traveled to Ireland in March 2017 for a five-ODI and three T20I tour, marking their debut against one of the top eight-ranked full members after previously only playing two ODIs against Zimbabwe in 2014. Afghanistan were victorious on both tours as both series ended up winning by their side.
Test
Test matches between Afghanistan and England have taken on more significance in recent years than mere competitions; they have become symbols of hope for players from a country that has survived incredible hardship. Afghanistan hosted England for five ODI and three T20I matches between March 2023 and 2024, winning each series by three victories each – in T20I the Afghans beat England 3-0 setting a new T20I record with consecutive wins – while for ODI they split first four matches before drawing their final match 2-2.
The next year, both teams met again in India for two tests and three T20 matches that ended in a draw. Afghanistan outscored England by over 300 runs in each match played over these three T20 series; England eventually managed to come out ahead by an innings and 78 runs during the final Test however.
Afghanistan won their maiden ICC Champions Trophy title in 2025 despite losing to South Africa in their opening match.
Naveed Zadran had one of the tournament’s finest innings when he batted 177 not out to give Afghanistan hope of winning against England who started off well when both Root and Duckett made quick runs; unfortunately both fell quickly before Azmatullah and Farooqi sealed Afghanistan’s victory.
Afghanistan qualified for the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 by winning second-place in its World Twenty20 Qualifier tournament and under the guidance of former Pakistan international Inzamam-ul-Haq as coach.

At ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, they saw even better results, reaching quarter-finals after defeating Uganda, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Bangladesh en route.
ICC World Cup
Afghanistan has experienced a long and turbulent history, yet cricket remains part of their culture and they have established themselves as excellent white-ball players.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board was established in 1995 and became an associate member of the ICC in 2001; then an ODI full member in 2003 before receiving Test status along with Ireland in June 2017 to bring up to twelve Test nations worldwide.
Australia made their World Cup debut at Canberra’s Manuka Oval in 2015. Although they lost to Bangladesh in their initial matchup, they managed to defeat Scotland and advance to the Super 10 stage – this marked their inaugural win at World Cup level.
Next they won comfortably against Sri Lanka before facing Zimbabwe for their final group match – winning this time but still failing to qualify for semi-finals and going on to lose to India and West Indies; ultimately finishing sixth overall.
In 2023, they participated in the ICC World Twenty20, where they defeated New Zealand and Bangladesh but lost against Sri Lanka and South Africa – leading to them missing out on making it to the semi-finals but being granted entry via tiebreaker into quarter-finals instead.
They began the quarter-final against United Arab Emirates, who won the toss and elected to bat. Unfortunately, they struggled early and were reduced to 37-3 after only a few overs. Shahidi and Zadran joined forces for an excellent 102-run partnership that gave them hope of recovery before Archer bowled Zadran with one-handed catch at deep midwicket by Archer – providing their opponents with some much-needed momentum in an otherwise tough match-up.
Root and Duckett both made thirty, but neither could capitalise on their good starts, falling short of the target. Jos Buttler’s classy innings was ended by Omarzai with an off spinner leg-slip before spinners dismissed Overton and Wood, England’s first defeat since 2015.
This result will undoubtedly come as a blow, especially considering it was hard for many to comprehend that an Afghan side could overpower England just a few years earlier.
