HBG Austin was the driving force behind the 1928 tour. He ran a shipping business while also serving in Barbados’ House of Assembly and attended meetings which granted West Indies Test status.

1900

Cricket had never experienced such an epic battle as that which took place inside Paris Olympic Village’s Velodrome de Vincennes during 1900 Paris Olympics, between teams representing Great Britain (referred to by its advertising handbills as England) and France – neither represented national sides, with Devon and Somerset Wanderers players making up most of Britain’s squad; only two out of 24 players who took to the field that day having previously experienced first-class cricket.

1906

Early English teams were not composed solely of top players, yet this squad contained several powerful batsmen like Sherwell, Smith, Schwarz & Faulkner which proved particularly effective at restricting visitors’ scoring potential.

As in 1900, the West Indies team was selected by two representatives from each colony competing. While slightly stronger than its counterpart from 1900, this squad still couldn’t compete against England’s first-class counties;

Cameron, Cumberbatch, Goodman and Learmond replaced Bancroft, Constantine, Morrison Parker Ollivierre with Ollivierre keeping wicket. Wiltshire won the toss and batted first;

Bertie Harragin scored an outstanding 57 in 75 minutes while Harold Austin and Harragin put on an impressive ninth wicket stand of 68 in 45 minutes to give the tourists an advantage of 123 runs over Wiltshire’s bat. Wiltshire won the toss and batted first;

Harold Austin made an excellent 68 run partnership before Austin retired his bowler his fellow batsmen put 68 runs between themselves to take out Wiltshire by 175 runs!

1975

The inaugural Prudential World Cup ’75 (also known as Prudential World Cup 75) held from June 7-21 1975 marked an important turning point in cricket.

It introduced One Day International (ODI) format and established future tournament structures. England faced off against West Indies in a final that marked both teams. West Indies led by their powerful batting and fearsome bowling;

Clive Lloyd scored an incredible 102 off 85 balls; setting a standard that has since become synonymous with ODI cricket; however Duleep Mendis was hit in his head and stretchered off before match began!

1981

Jos Buttler followed up his superb century from Bristol with an equally brilliant partnership of 197 runs with Harry Brook to put England in an advantageous position against West Indies’ bowlers who were struggling.

Buttler’s series of scoops, reverse-sweeps and switch hits left his opponents stunned despite him being dropped at long off off Johnson Charles’ initial ball at long off on 43 runs.

England had not started well on their tour. A cholera outbreak and Ken Barrington’s death had compounded their difficulties, while Bob Willis returned early for treatment on a knee injury. Both he and other key players faced setbacks, with Robin Jackman taking over the captaincy and Graham Dilley continuing as vice-captain.

Boycott, Gooch, Miller, Old, Emburey, Willey and Rose were among the squad members. These events form an important chapter in the England Cricket Team Vs West Indies Cricket Team Timeline, highlighting the challenges England faced during their tour.
