Defensive Line
The defensive line serves as the primary line of defense, responsible for stopping runs and rushing quarterbacks. Achieving these tasks requires mentally and physically tough individuals who can stand up to blockers with stamina to withstand game length.
Furthermore, when it comes to run defense there’s gap responsibility assigned per play that must take on blockers while guarding that gap and tackle running backs who attempt to pass it by taking on blockers while guarding that gap until play ends if needed.
Pass rushing defensive ends’ job is to push past offensive tackles and into the backfield to make life difficult for running backs and quarterbacks. They tend to be lighter than defensive tackles so can slip past blocks more easily; however, they must also possess quickness and be equipped with effective pass rush moves in order to be effective in this role.
LSU’s pass rush was effective against Florida today, forcing three turnovers and holding them to just one touchdown in the first half. Da’Shawn Spears returned an interception off DJ Lagway for LSU while TaMarcus Cooley, AJ Haulcy and DJ Pickett all recorded interception stats as well.
A strong defensive line should be capable of forcing their opponent to punt on every drive, giving their defense a chance to stop the running game and generate enough pressure on the quarterback to cause errors and create opportunities for sacks.
A great defensive line will create space for its linebackers, who in turn will rush the quarterback and tackle running backs. Furthermore, these defensive lines must also prevent opposing offenses from entering their red zones and handle double teams effectively, all while exerting consistent pressure on quarterbacks as often encountered against teams with strong running games.
LSU was without their top defensive player Tayler Carter due to a leg injury, starting the game with only four starters in their defense and struggling with Florida’s running attack.
Offensive Line
Florida’s offensive line is one of the best in the nation and this year features two All-American guards in Orlando Brown and Alex Mack. Brown was named co-Offensive Lineman of the Year while Mack earned second team All-SEC accolades. Together they help the Gators run an uptempo offense which has allowed them to score points at an unprecedented rate.
Josh McElwain has taken over as offensive coordinator, and the Gators are employing an innovative scheme known as the Air Raid this season. It entails quickly getting the ball airborne before using running backs Mike Gillislee and Andre Debose to open up space on their own. This has proven effective against LSU’s tough defense in past games.
Grant Chadwick punted short, moving the Gators into the red zone; however, a holding penalty on 3rd and 3 thwarted an 87-yard touchdown pass between DJ Lagway and Jadan Baugh; marking yet another instance this season when one or more Gator plays have been cut short by penalties.
As the first quarter neared its conclusion, Florida took advantage of an early turnover when LSU kicker Derek Helton fumbled a field goal snap attempt resulting in a two-yard run by Fred Taylor to capitalize on it and score their own touchdown.
At halftime, both teams were tied. A 98-yard touchdown reception from Tyrie Cleveland put Florida ahead 13-10; subsequent touchdowns by Mike Gillislee and Omarius Hines sealed Florida’s victory in the fourth quarter.
The Florida-LSU rivalry is one of the longest running college football rivalries in America. Since 1971 when divisional play was instituted by the Southeastern Conference (SEC), both teams have met annually since then to compete.
ESPN ranks their rivalry as No. 6 most intense college rivalry and it is known for controversy and in-game skirmishes between games; Florida-LSU have combined to win five national championships and eleven SEC titles since they first met each year!
Linebackers
Florida has long been blessed with top-tier talent at linebacker position, and Florida is no different. Led by veterans like Jared Robinson and Myles Graham inside and second-year defenders Ty Jackson and Myles Johnson providing depth, this unit should once again prove itself effective this season.
LSU found some offensive life early in the game with Garrett Nussmeier’s 23-yard strike to Zavion Thomas that netted LSU its first touchdown and cut Florida’s lead from 10-6 down to 10-8, before Florida responded with its own drive as DJ Lagway hit Aidan Mizell for six – making the halftime score tied.
At the start of the third quarter, LSU grabbed an important turnover. TaMarcus Cooley blitzed Florida’s offensive line before Dahvon Keys and Patrick Payton applied pressure on quarterback DJ Lagway causing him to throw an interception that LSU’s Da’Shawn Spears recovered for LSU; forcing Florida to punt.
Florida took over possession with over seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and scored the go-ahead touchdown when Mike Gillislee ran into the end zone, but couldn’t hold on as Andre Debose returned an interception for a score and Omarius Hines completed two-point conversion for an equal scoreline at 26 apiece.
As we enter 2026, Florida football program is taking on new challenges under new coach Jon Sumrall. Although Florida boasts great depth at nearly every position group, interior linebacker may remain an area of contention for them.
Thanks to an outstanding recruiting class featuring senior stars Jaden Robinson and Myles Graham as well as promising sophomores Myles Johnson and Aaron Chiles; new inside linebackers coach Greg Gasparato should help unlock this group’s true potential.
Quarterbacks
Tigers and Gators are in a fierce rivalry in the SEC West and both teams enter Saturday night’s match unbeaten.

LSU’s offense struggled early, while their defense stood strong to limit Florida to only one field goal. But after halftime, LSU saw much greater success on offense with Garrett Nussmeier finding Zavion Thomas for a touchdown pass to give LSU a 13-10 edge.
After a lengthy drive by Florida, LSU forced yet another three-and-out. Florida quarterback DJ Lagway then threw an interception that LSU safety DaShawn Spears picked off; one of five interceptions made that night by LSU defensive back DaShawn Spears alone!
Even with their turnovers, the Tigers were unable to match Florida’s powerful offense. Florida capitalized on a misplaced snap during a short field goal attempt and drove into Tiger territory before scoring on Tyrie Cleveland’s 98-yard catch and run touchdown play.
In the fourth quarter, both teams traded turnovers until LSU made its statement with three interceptions by TaMarcus Cooley, AJ Haulcy, and DJ Pickett to seal victory for them.
Late in the game, Florida attempted a comeback but failed. A fumble by their holder led to an incomplete pass and punt by Tigers; on their next possession however, Gators advanced within 10 yards of Tigers 10-yard line but an unfortunate late game error cost Gators their chance at victory.
After the game, Florida head coach Jeremy Foley was asked about an altercation that took place in the end zone during pregame warm-ups and said he did not believe it was anything too serious.
