Predictions
Last time these teams met, OU was defeated in a close game that came down to the last play. Now though, Oklahoma appears much stronger and will look for its third consecutive victory against Alabama – although Alabama have also been performing admirably, including their win against Georgia in the SEC Championship game.
Alabama boasts one of the best pass defenses in college football, allowing just 181.8 yards per game through passing alone. Meanwhile, their running game has been one of their main weaknesses; only 107 yards have been averaged per game from running backs this season despite Alabama’s pass-rushing unit making up for that deficit.
Oklahoma’s defense may not be an elite unit, but they do know how to create pressure and force tough throws – as evidenced by recent wins over Ole Miss and Tennessee. Furthermore, their run defense holds firm against Alabama limiting short yardage situations for short yardage situations.
On the other hand, Oklahoma is limited by its efficiency grades; their offense isn’t designed for shootouts and quarterback John Mateer must use his legs to extend plays. But against a Bama defense vulnerable to running plays, they could find some scoring chances for themselves.
This will be the ninth meeting between Alabama and Oklahoma, with their first matchup taking place in the 1963 Orange Bowl, where Alabama earned a 17-0 victory. Since then, the rivalry has produced several memorable contests between the two powerhouse programs.
