India vs Ireland 1st ODI
India women reached a national record score of 435-5 against Ireland in one-day international cricket at Rajkot, thanks to Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal’s opening stand of 233 runs as India set off on an incredible one-day international campaign that they eventually won three times out of three matches 3-0.
India spinners played their part well by dismissing Irish batsmen so easily and sealing off this series 3-0 for India.
Mandhana’s composed 89 helped India to win and earned her player of the match honors, marking her second woman (after Mithali Raj ) to reach 4000 ODI runs, making her one of the leading run scorers.
India made an early run at their target, reaching it easily and reaching their goal with enough time to spare. India extended their advantage further when Tejal Hasabnis scored 53 to seal the game and take a 2-0 advantage in the series.
Ireland captain Gaby Lewis and Leah Paul attempted their best with the bat, scoring 92 and 115 respectively; but it wasn’t enough to challenge India’s dominant batting performance.
Ireland was restrained from scoring by Titas Sadhu and Deepti Sharma who each claimed two wickets from Ireland’s batswomen batting innings.
India established themselves early, reaching 332 for five wickets at the halfway stage. But with two key players departing (wicketkeeper-batsman Mithali Raj and leg spinner Ravi Bopara), their absence led to India’s spinners taking control and wrapping up Irish batsmen to seize control of the game.
Irish batsmen fought valiantly to prevent an embarrassing defeat against India in their opening ODI, with stand-in captain Lewis and Leah Paul making half-centuries. Unfortunately for Ireland though, India’s batsmen such as Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues’ poor fielding performance ensured an easy win for home side.
Ireland will look to avenge their defeat in the remaining ODIs of this series. But they should take heart from having put up an admirable fight against India despite losing, with positives that should rub off onto domestic cricket as well as increased confidence of being an international force to reckon with. India women will look to complete a whitewash of Ireland when they play the second ODI in Rajkot on January 12. Stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana will lead her side as Harmanpreet Kaur remains out due to injury. For Ireland’s part, regular captain Amy Hunter has also been forced out from this tour.
The Women in Blue are one of the premier teams in international cricket, having made remarkable strides since Rahul Jolly took over coaching duties in 2023. Competing across all three formats – Tests, ODIs and Twenty20Is – they often rank amongst the world’s elite sides.
Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal forged an unprecedented opening wicket partnership of 233 runs to propel India to an incredible 435-5 total in their opening ODI match against Australia.
Mandhana later scored an unbeaten 70-ball century while Rawal finished off her innings with an unruffled 89 score.
Ireland faltered during their chase of 236 as wickets fell at regular intervals. Leah Paul and Gaby Lewis put up valiant resistance but couldn’t prevent an overwhelming defeat for Ireland.
Irish will take plenty of positives away from India despite losing the series 2-0, as their experience there showed they can compete with some of the finest teams worldwide and they will return home full of renewed confidence.
On Friday at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, India won the toss and elected to bat first, choosing Jemimah Rodrigues’ unbeaten 102 as an opener and Harleen Deol’s excellent 89 as her innings finale scores.
India’s bowlers did an outstanding job of restricting Ireland’s run-scoring abilities, with Mithali Raj and Thirushkamini Dhawan both scoring half centuries and Titas Sadhu and Deepti Sharma taking two wickets each to keep Ireland’s scoring rate low;
Ireland could only muster up 340-8 before India easily secured victory by six wickets; this series now heads back to Mumbai for its third and final ODI on January 14; its venue and date should be announced shortly by BCCI.

India women’s cricket team beat Ireland by an emphatic margin in Rajkot. Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal shared an opening-wicket stand of 233 runs to propel India to 435-5 after they won the toss and elected to bat first.
Indian victory sealed a clean sweep in the series and dealt Ireland their second defeat of this tour. Ireland’s batswomen struggled against India’s superior bowling attack and were dismissed for just 131 runs; medium pacer Orla Prendergast being most successful Irish wicket-taker with two wickets taken.
Mandhana, serving in place of regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur on this tour, continued her impressive form by reaching her fourth ODI century and equalling Mithali Raj’s record in record time. Meanwhile Pratika Rawal also performed well and achieved her maiden international century while earning Player of the Match honors.
Ireland’s chase of India was always going to be challenging and proved so when they were bowled out for just 134. Leah Paul made an admirable fifty but it wasn’t enough as Titas Sadhu and Deepti Sharma of India bowled with precision to close out Ireland’s innings with ease and score an easy victory.
Ireland can draw some positives from their performance against India despite suffering an overwhelming defeat, and head into their next tournament with renewed confidence that they are an international force to be reckoned with.
They hope this success will encourage more young Irish players to pick up the sport and help strengthen the side. They hope to capitalize on recent success for the ODI World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June 2025 – until then it’s back to practice and hard work! Good luck to Ireland girls!
