TreVeyon Henderson
After losing the opening coin toss, New England quickly won possession and used their powerful running game to advance their initial drive downfield.
Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson led this charge, amassing 79 rushing yards combined during their initial drive; additionally, New England out-rushed Buffalo by 177 yards during this first half period.
After an initially slow second quarter start, Buffalo began making progress towards closing down New England’s lead. Ray Davis made an outstanding kickoff return, followed by Brenden Schooler’s face mask penalty which put Buffalo at New England’s 41-yard line.
On the following play, Josh Allen found tight end Dawson Knox for a 20-yard gain to enter New England territory. A few plays later, Cook took advantage of 3rd and 5 to drive into red zone territory and tie the score.
On the next drive, the Patriots held off Bills by forcing a punt. Unfortunately, their offense couldn’t capitalize on this good field position and take advantage of what had become prime real estate.
In the third quarter, Buffalo started to take control of the game once again. A short pass from Allen to Josh Allen set up a 3-rd-and-1 conversion by running back James Cook on a one-yard touchdown run, giving Bills their first score and cutting Patriots’ lead down to 21-7 at two minute warning.
New England attempted to come back, but Tom Brady fumbling on their initial play of their next drive led to TreVeyon Henderson returning the punt for a touchdown on his punt return, giving New Orleans great field position and giving TreVeyon another opportunity for another touchdown return – this time on third down and one. Henderson made Patriots history when he scored both a rushing and receiving touchdown in one game since RB Damien Harris did it back in 1995 and later during this season when playing Buffalo (11/13). Henderson amassed 161 total yards – this marks his career best – while recording a second consecutive touchdown with his 69-yard run against Tampa Bay (11/9).
Josh Allen
Josh Allen was able to get his offense on track in the second half of this game. Following three-and-out play, his team went on a scoring drive which yielded his first touchdown of the season and totaled more than 100 rushing yards which was a franchise record.
Allen led his Bills team on a five-play, 75-yard drive to cut New England’s lead to 24-21 with 52-yard run by TreVeyon Henderson and 10-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Drake Maye. New England attempted to respond, but their third down pass to Rob Gronkowski was intercepted by Byron Spillane.
Buffalo used another quick punt to take the lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the game, following three-and-outs from both teams, followed by punting back onto their 20-yard lines for Allen to throw a series of deep passes into tight windows on both sides of the field. A pass interference penalty against Carlton Davis on 3rd down helped further propel their drive.
Allen entered the draft despite only modest college production, yet was considered to have great potential due to his size, arm strength, speed, running ability and high football IQ which enabled him to make smart decisions during games.
Allen has since evolved into one of the premier young quarterbacks in the league, earning himself a spot on the All-Rookie Team of the NFL.
Currently second in passing yards among rookie quarterbacks, Allen has also thrown for 200 or more yards in all but four of his games this season while also rushing for over 80 yards 12 times (an unprecedented accomplishment among rookie quarterbacks).
James Cook
After a disappointing start to their season, Buffalo was eager for a victory and took full advantage of New England Patriots’ poor showing in Foxborough by defeating them 35-10 and clinching the AFC East title. This victory marked their largest ever against them and snapped their 14-game road losing streak on their travels; additionally it marked War Memorial Stadium’s final game before moving onto Rich Stadium for good the following season.
On their opening drive of the second half, the Bills scored on running back James Cook’s 77-yard touchdown run that veered right past outstretched arms of safety Patrick Chung on its way towards goalline. If the Patriots defeat Buffalo this week they would improve to 4-0 in AFC East games and earn their first season sweep against them since 1970;
