Prabhsimran Singh 91 off 48 balls
Prabhsimran Singh’s 91-ball innings helped Punjab Kings defeat Lucknow Super Giants by 37 runs and boost their playoff chances.
The opener smashed six fours and seven sixes as the Kings posted 236-5, the second-highest total at this ground in IPL history.
He forged partnerships of 48 with Josh Inglis (30 off 14) and 78 with Shreyas Iyer (45 off 25 balls). He added 54 for the sixth wicket with Shashank Singh, who made a swift cameo of 33 not out from 15 balls.
He was finally dismissed in Digvesh Singh Rathi’s penultimate over, caught in the covers by Nicholas Pooran.
Chasing such a huge target, LSG stumbled early with Arshdeep Singh (3-16) removing Mitchell Marsh (0) and Aiden Markram (13) in the powerplay and Azmatullah Omarzai trapping Pooran lbw for six.
Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad fought back with a well-played 81-run partnership but the damage was already done by that stage. LSG were left chasing 199/7 at the end, falling way short of the target.
This win gives PBKS the momentum to go on the offensive in their push for a top-four finish, and they move up to second in the points table. This is also their first win at the HPCA Stadium in 14 years.
LSG, on the other hand, have lost three out of their last four matches and are now fifth in the standings with 10 points.
They will need to win all their remaining games and hope for some other results to go their way if they are to qualify for the playoffs.
LSG captain Rishabh Pant chose to bat first and were off to a slow start, going down to 36/3 in the powerplay with Mayank Yadav (2-59) making a mockery of his expensive spell at the Dharamsala pitch.
He soon brought in Avesh Khan and Digvesh Rathi, but they couldn’t stem the flow of runs as the batting line-up for PBKS ripped through them with ease.
They finished with a massive total of 236, their highest ever IPL score at this venue and the second-highest overall.
Shreyas Iyer 45 off 25 balls
Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten knock of 45 off 25 balls propelled PBKS to an astounding total of 236/5 against LSG in their innings. His 71-run stand with Josh Inglis (30 off 14 balls) and the 78-run third wicket stand with Prabhsimran Singh (91 off 48 balls, five fours and seven sixes) provided an effective platform for their innings.
Iyer took on Prince Yadav for the second over, opening with an instant six off his first ball and going on to score another four boundaries and another boundary before Yadav attempted a full toss that Iyer used his bat to hit over backward point for yet another six.
The PBKS captain continued his attack in the fourth over, taking two wickets within three deliveries of bowler Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad’s opening bowlers’ deliveries.
They tried hard to regain the advantage with quick runs but could only find success occasionally before being brought down as PBKS wrapped up their run-chase effectively.
After the match, Iyer heaped praise upon Prabhsimran’s performance: he described him as an outstanding world-class player and set the tone for us today.” Coach Ricky Ponting had expressed his joy over PBKS’ win, keeping their playoff hopes alive while moving them up into second position in the table – only two wins away from reaching the top four spot! Their next home match against Delhi Capitals takes place Wednesday.
Shashank Singh 33 not out off 15 balls
Shashank Singh calmed the Chinnaswamy crowd in the final over of their innings by hitting Alzarri Joseph for two sixes and fours to elevate Punjab Kings to 176-6 and keep their top-four ambitions alive. This stunning strike had Chinnaswamy silenced.
Punjab made an admirable effort against South India after an inauspicious start despite losing opener Priyansh Arya within the powerplay.
Prabhsimran Singh came on strong thereafter and scored an unbeaten 91 off 48 balls; combined with Josh Inglis’ 30 off 14 deliveries and Shreyas Iyer’s 45 from 25 deliveries they helped post an impressive 236-5 total.
LSG’s chase began poorly as they continued to lose wickets regularly; Aiden Markram fell for 13 and Mitchell Marsh was caught for five-ball duck, yet Ayush Badoni kept hitting boundaries to narrow the margin of defeat, joined by Abdul Samad who scored 74 off 40 balls during their second innings.
But this was not enough as PBKS quickly ended the match with precision. Arshdeep struck in the opening over of the final over, dismissing Nicholas Pooran for six to set the tone and set Rishabh Pant and David Miller off cheaply in subsequent overs, ending any chance for LSG of making a comeback.
Punjab bowlers exhibited a standout performance against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), restricting them to just 199-7 in 20 overs at the end.
Moeen Ali and Harshit Rana chipped in with wickets to keep Punjab at bay with only three bowlers. Arshdeep Singh 3 for 20
Prabhsimran Singh’s 91-ball ton, along with Shreyas Iyer and Josh Inglish (30 off 14), put Punjab Kings (PBKS) well on their way towards scoring 236/5 against LSG; unfortunately their top order fell away to Arshdeep Singh’s pace and spin bowling for only 199/7 in the end.
Left-arm bowler Luke Wright was in fine form, keeping batters at bay with pinpoint yorkers and big match temperament.
Earlier he had been rewarded for his efforts with two wickets in three overs; Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram proved particularly costly as both went for big hits during their innings.
In the third over, Singh used his leg break to hit Abhishek Sharma square on and hit him in the pads – the ball deflected off his back foot before flying straight toward the boundary. Later in the fifth over he gave Sharma width and got him to hit past long-on for six.
Few overs later, he used his full toss as a batsman’s full bat to send another six shot past long-on for six. At the conclusion of his spell, an overstepped ball gave him another free hit that resulted in another six off the first ball of the next over.
At just 25-years-old, this 25-year-old was beginning an incredible spell that threatened to rip through LSG’s middle order and dismiss Badoni and Samad in quick succession, effectively stopping their innings and deflating LSG’s chances.
He produced an outstanding performance after illness had kept him out of two matches earlier. His five front foot no-balls involving full Members was joint-most in any T20I over, further increasing his chances of selection to India’s national side. Looking ahead, the series against Bangladesh starts November 19 and this spell will no doubt have further strengthened it.
